There was a time when Russia would not tolerate such a murder without
massive retaliation.
Read, "get even plus!"
Has the Russian Bear gotten as soft as we Americans have?

Even my tolerance only goes so far.

Does anyone know? Was this an act from those representing the religion of peace?

"delivering humanitarian aid" or so the Russians claim.
I suppose in war all things are considered targets.
So it goes.

A Russian warplane flies over an enemy position. Unlike the usual, the enemy brings it down.
What the cargo may have been could hardly be known to the rebels and probably wouldn't have mattered since the helicopter would be just as likely to be sent on a bombing raid next anyway.

I'm not sure why this is a big deal. It's not like the rebels aren't going to get lucky sometime. Probably pilot and/or instrument error or simply a lucky shot.

If I was Putin I would put 3000 rubles down that they couldn't do it again.

from the article :
The helicopter was returning from delivering humanitarian aid to the city of Aleppo, Russia's Interfax news agency quoted officials as saying
"delivering humanitarian aid" or so the Russians claim.

You can bet your booties that future humanitarian runs will go in with heavy cover.
The Russian helicopter was armed. If you watch the video at 0:09 (nine seconds in), there's an object that's on the ground that looks like a bunch of pipes held together with sheet metal. That's a rocket pod, which fires unguided rockets (probably 57mm rockets).

If you look at the second picture on this page, it shows a Mi-8 helicopter with similar rocket pods.
If you look at the picture on this page, there's a better picture of the same rocket pods, but attached to a different helicopter.

It's quite possible that the helicopter was being used for transport. It's not uncommon to arm transport helicopters in war zones. It's also possible that the helicopter was carrying humanitarian aid.

But from the ground, that would have looked like an armed helicopter.

If you are standing on the ground, and you see a helicopter in the air, how can you tell what kind of mission it's on?
  • You can probably see the weapons that it's carrying (especially something large/obvious like a rocket pod.
  • You might be able to tell which country it belongs to by the markings.
  • If you're knowledgeable about helicopters, you might be able to make some assumptions about what kind of missions it can't do.
An Mi-8 is most commonly used for transport. It can carry 24 people (civilians or soldiers). It can carry up to 4 tons of cargo (humanitarian aid, weapons, ammo, etc).

So, even if* the helicopter was on a humanitarian mission, it was an armed helicopter in a war zone. It was a valid military target.

* While it is logical to arm a helicopter that's providing humanitarian aid, it's equally logical for the Russians to lie and claim that it was providing humanitarian aid ... if it was on any other kind of mission.

And a CNN report pointed out a detail that I overlooked. Either the helicopter was flying around with empty rocket pods, or it fired off it's rockets before being shot down.

How do you know it was on a humanitarian aid mission?
Russian news , and artile.

I am against violence in general.
But if the Russians fly a helicopter over my town I would shoot it down if I could.
