Religion & Spirituality

Spirituality is the universal cult that expands the individual mind to liberation from all bondages.
Religion is a dogmatic set of rules and regulations and promotes a sectarian, mythical and superstitious outlook.

What is the Difference Between Religion & Spirituality?
your spirit is the blend between your thoughts and your feelings

your hand responds because you thought you should
or because you felt like it

religion is a practice
brought on by what you think and feel about Spirit

The difference is between the exoteric, religion, and esoteric, spirituality. Religion focuses on scriptures, rituals and outward signs of behavior. Spirituality focuses on the inner processes.

Personally, I don't recognize one and do not use the words "spiritual" or "spirituality." In my country though, it became vogue to use the word "religion" to refer to public or institutional aspects and "spirituality" to refer to private or personal aspects. It also became vogue to demean "religion" and elevate "spirituality" due to dissatisfaction with institutional religions in the United States. None of this holds much water if one's religion was not particularly public or institutional to begin with, or if one did not have an axe to grind - hence, I reject the dichotomy.

Spirituality is the reason and inner connection of ones love and thankfrulness for their parent.

Religion is giving their parent a hug, saying I love you, and taking that parent out because of it.

Without love, why hug your parent?

Without hugging(taking care of, etc, saying) your parent, how do you show you love him?

Dont let the words throw you. One is emotion and intent. The other is expression an action based on that emotion and intent.

Spiritualiy: Im hungry
Religion: Can I have a # 5 please and a shake?

Religion is organized through an authority. Spirituality is a haphazard approach to mental wellbeing where the individual can decide for themselves the necessary ideology. However, it often borrows eclectically from religious belief.

I've always been baffled by USians who say they're "spiritual but not religious" as both are roughly synonyms for "devout" in the Queen's English, although "spiritual" is probably obsolete. Having read this thread, I've still none the wiser; luckily, it doesn't matter.

No specific definable difference between religion and spirituality, and they over lap in definition. Religion is a word that is often used as a 'whipping boy,' or 'scapegoat,' with the bogus; 'What I believe is spirituality and not religion.'

The difference is that religion is codified in some way and usually includes some group. Spirituality is personal and requires nothing except mindset.

Must Science Conflict With Spirituality?

quote:
Spirituality is a way of being in the world, a sense of one’s place in the cosmos, a relationship to that which extends beyond ourselves. I call this sciencuality, a neologism that echoes the sensuality of discovery. “Our contemplations of the cosmos stir us,” the astronomer Carl Sagan declared, waxing poetic in the opening scene of his documentary series “Cosmos,” one of the most spiritual expressions of science ever produced. “There is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation as if a distant memory of falling from a great height. We know we are approaching the grandest of mysteries.”

Religion need not be codified in some way. In fact the Unitarian Universalists are not codified in a certain way.

I’m not buying the duality being presented here. Religion is spirituality — at least that’s what it was designed to be. I it focuses on externals, it’s only because many practice it that way. Religion does focus on the inner experience. At least Xy does. I suspect Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism do too. The distinction (in my understanding) is that religion is identified by set doctrines, dogmas, beliefs, creeds, and ways of forming distinct community around those shared things. Spirituality is more an umbrella term, and is less tightly defined and practiced. Spirituality is inclusive of religious systems, while religions are exclusive of each other.

What is the Difference Between Religion & Spirituality?
Both believe that truth and knowledge are obtained via revelation, and therefore accept fiction as true, believing stories about reality. But only science (in its proper domain) can generate provable truth and knowledge.

Perhaps there are forms of spirituality based on philosophy: at least there is hope for sound reasoning when delving into philosophy. It is a good thing to try to understand clear thinking.
