Religious guilt

I was brought up Jewish orthodox but I've left that lifestyle behind and don't keep religion at all.

I still feel that I'm making God upset for not being religious. But I don't want to be religious. I've spoken to religious people but it hasn't helped.

Can anyone help or have any ideas?

I think your problem may be that you lack self-confidence. Perhaps expose yourself to the wide world of religious discussions and you will have to tools to not feel bullied by what others have told you.

Hmm... I faced something similar, though instead of upsetting god I just felt personal discontent. Maybe instead of cutting out religion altogether, you could practice something you feel comfortable with on your own terms?

The way I see it, it takes a lot of effort to reeducate one from long-conditioned emotional responses.

It helps to first learn not to fear those responses. They are not worth of your fear, and they do feed on it.

Picture yourself dialoging with those emotions in order to understand and eventually lovingly overcome them may also be useful.

How can you be irreligious while thinking you can make God upset?

If there is a god, I am sure this entity is far more concerned about things far greater than us following one of the myriad of feeble attempts we humans have at explaining it (that very often and frequently conveniently put humans in some sort of "special place").

How do we know what God's interested in?

We can only see the small bit the light spectrum and we can only hear sounds within a certain range. How can we say with any confidence that we could know this god's interests? We've seen only a very tiny bit of the universe. How can we really make claims about something that is supposed to lie beyond the universe?

Well you asked why would God be interested in what we do. so I'm asking how do we know what God wants?

I can't imagine. That is a lot to keep track of. Is there like a general guideline to go by or something?
They just give pep talks to keep you in line so you don't ask too many questions and keep you in fear.
