Religious Parodies

What do the posters on here think of religious parodies? Is this a legitimate way of criticising certain aspects of religious beliefs?

Personally I love parodies. I don't care if they are an aspect of myself or not..
Even though I do not follow a religion.
For example I love "the big bang theory-show" and can see myself in there in many ways..

who says there parodies, a flying spagettie moster is just as likely to exist as an omnipotant creator, some even say they saw the flying spagettie monster ride his invisable pink unicorn
Parodies... Right, different kind BBB..

Ok, In that case, I think it's impossible to give a perfect good way to show religion with a parody. The purpose is to show the religious person what it is to believe something wich sounds incredibly like fiction for the atheist. However, because the religious people don't think their version is fiction they either do not understand or even think it's an insult.

I enjoy religious parodies. its a great way of parading our sacred cows on a clever stage of comic relief.
this idea is not a new phenomena, thousands of years ago, Homer used the Olympian gods as a comic relief in his epics: Iliad and Odyssey, the gods were presented bickering in all their vanity, while human beings were dealing with the dramas of the Trojan-Greek conflict.

One of the best religious parodies hands down is Life of Brian.

Absolutely.

I find it funny that all sorts of rationalisations complaining about concepts such as the FSM can be thrown out by people taking it as an offensive thing – and seem to end up confirming what the parody is trying to demonstrate.

I enjoy them when they're pointed, but they get overused. It seems that many people use them as an excuse to avoid honest discussion.

When I first saw a Jack Chick tract, I thought THAT was a parody. If only...

Agreed on the Life of Brian assessment - my favourite Python film.

I agree about Life of Brian being one of the best religious parodies ever. The scene of the stoning where the Roman official himself gets stoned to death has me rolling on the floor laughing every time. I also love the cartoon that shows Muhammed up in heaven and he sees in the distance some suicide bombers who just died and are on their way up to heaven and Muhammed is shouting to them "Go back! Go back! we just ran out of virgins!"

Religious parodies can be really funny. Some of those Televangelists can be humorous without meaning to be. I guess the only time I mind is when they make fun of God Himself.

I don't mind Religious Parodies, a lot of them are funny. Though at times they can get annoying.

It works to expose them. It often fails to criticize them (sometimes even reinforcing them).
