Because he didn't expect to win, and when he did he hired some ethical people. They kept him from doing many illegal things, according to their testimonies. The criminal candidate won;t make that mistake again, especially now that the SCOTUS gave him total immunity.

I am not so sure about not expecting to win. I am pretty sure that he hoped to win. His income tax case is still out there. Sometimes the IRS is very very slow with their prosecutions. If he loses they could still go after him. When he was elected he did not know better than to get rid of all of the ethical people. He did not realize that the power of the President is limited. Now they have a plan if he gets elected.
I remember reports after that election that he and his campaign staff expected a loss. They were not prepared at all. They had few people in place for the administration.
Of course. But recall Clinton had the higher polling numbers and higher chance to win. And that was before any criminal indictments a a motivation to get elected.
The taxes were still civil, not criminal. Unlike what Hunter had to face. Trump went through his business as cover.
Trump was clueless about the job duties. He still is clueless. That's why he suggested shooting protestors as a deterent. He had to be informed it was illegal. He then suggested just shooting citizens in the legs. No. Still illegal.
The dude was an idiot. He's a bigger idiot today.

While Hitler was Hitler, even before the failed coup, Trump only became Hitler after the failed coup.

This is what we call a stramwan. No one said he literally became Hitler. He did push things toward authoritarianism and fascism. We were lucky that time that he and his backers were mostly disorganized with no clear plan. Mostly, it was just him saying and doing anything he thought would gain him more support and power.
Since then, he's become fully fascist and very Nazi-ish. I mean, he said immigrants are poisoning the blood of the country. He has said and done many things straight out of the Nazi playbook. But this is the problem. Whenever people point this out, others just dismiss it as "going overboard" and "hyperbole". I'm guessing it was the same kind of thing in 1930s Germany. I don't expect Trump or republicans to go full Nazi and start a Holocaust. That is still not a reasonable expectation. But he has started to talk about using the military against "enemies from within" including specific democratic politicians.

Americans (First Nations). He called Warren "Pocahontas", he crushed the protests at Standing Rock with an Executive Order, and he built his wall on sacred land, even unearthing skeletons.
Trump is roughly either around 1924 or 1933 on Hitler's timeline (roughly - when Trump had his "Beer Hall Putsch", he had already been elected president, so there isn't a perfect correlation.
At either of those points in the timeline, Hitler hadn't done those things either.
