Renaissance Men

Does anyone consider themselves, or have a desire to be a "renaissance man"? Skilled in multiple areas.

I've always sort've had a goal to become a renaissance man (without ever calling or realizing that's what it was). I don't really care about being well known/famous or even inventing something new such as Da Vinci.

But I do have a thorough enjoyment of learning and engaging in a wide variety of subjects such as, math, science, anatomy, philosophy, history, behavior, mysticism and theology.

"A renaissance man is defined as a man with well-rounded skills in cognitive, physical and social pursuits. The term came about during the Renaissance and emerged from the humanist tradition. Traditionally, Renaissance men were excellent philosophers but also strong, handsome and charismatic. We sometimes call a Renaissance Man a ‘polymath’."

"A Renaissance man is defined as a man who is knowledgeable or proficient in a variety of fields. In particular, it refers to a person who excels in science and mathematical fields, as well as in the humanities."

Wouldn't we all love to be one of these? But it gets harder and harder, as the extent of human knowledge increases.

I don't think it requires knowing every subject or even about all subjects. Just a solid handle on a chunk of both the Arts and Sciences; and being able to cross-apply them.

Edit: for instance I'd consider someone modern like Noam Chomsky as an example of a modern ren man. But he isn't an expert in every field, just a few.

I'm more like a "jack of all trades". Unskilled in multiple areas but willing to have a go. And that is how you become skilled in multiple areas of course, but there are too many areas and time is too short for expertise in any one area.

It is an idea that I have always found attractive.

One of my favorites on youtube is Malcolm Guite. I have so much admiration for the man. He is an expert in areas of literature and taught at Cambridge. He found his religious faith and became a priest. He is also a published poet. He has at least one other language, Italian, and plays guitar in a band.
On top of that, he comes across as an all-round nice person.

I especially recommend listening to him talk on JRR Tolkein and CS Lewis.

You can join in. We'll try not to be patronising. I'm sure you're good for a woman at what you do.

Without women I probably would not feel like a man at all.
Then again, without women maybe I would feel like a man.
