Republican's Plan Would Make 52 Members of Congress Ineligible to Serve

Republican's Plan Would Make 52 Members of Congress Ineligible to Serve

"A Republican congressman wants an age limit for politicians that would apply to presidents, vice presidents and all members of Congress.

Michigan Representative John James has introduced legislation that would amend the Constitution and prevent someone from running for office "if at any time during the term the person will be 75 years of age or older.

The resolution comes amid a wave of scrutiny, on both sides of the aisle, of some lawmakers and their ages. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, 81, has been a senator since 1985 and has had two speech-freezing episodes in the past two months. Democrat Dianne Feinstein, 90, who was elected in 1992, has also been a focus of concern about her health and has faced calls to step aside."

We have a minimum age. Makes sense for a maximum age.

However one needs to be cognizant that such legislation would be a two way street.

I would not object to a mandatory mental competency test, but I don't support age restrictions.

btw, I am a progressive, and I think a bill like this would help progressives. But I still don't think it is right.

The problem is not their age. The problem is that they have ALL rigged the election system to make them much harder to get rid of them once they get in office. We don't need age limits, we need more and better viable alternative candidates. We need to stop the gerrymandering, and the corporate campaign contributions, and the media manipulation. And we need real ethics laws to keep them all in check.

I'd go with term limits. Including the Supreme Court.
I want to see them both implemented for ALL government positions.
Federal, State, County, Township, City, et al

EDIT NOTE:
I mean all government officials, not just the elected ones...
and yes, this includes their support staff as well

I support age restrictions. Term limits on positions that don't have them would be ideal, too

From a practical sense, the longer a politician is in office, the more baggage they accumulate during their career. Rarely do they become better with age, and more often than not do they become jaded, cynical, and corrupt. They get set in their ways and protective of the power they accumulate. If we want to see badly needed changes happen, it's gonna be coming from fresh faces

It is not you age, it is your health both mental and physical.
However physical health is a questionable factor, take FDR for instance.

This would also exclude Trump from running. He's 77.

I'm not okay with ageism, no. Especially not in a country that excessively romanticizes youth while treating its elders so poorly.

There are many far more needed reforms to the system than this. Like national ranked choice voting, which would more or less instantly destroy the current bipartisan political system because voters could actually vote for a third party candidate without feeling like they're throwing their vote away.
