Restricting Threads

I'm wondering about the OK-ness of something. Now, I know that we have the rules for who can post in Feminist/Communist/Socialist/Conservative/Liberal Only, and in the DIRs. But would it be cool to post a thread in a general section, but with 'X Only' in the title, and have that respected? So say I wanted to have a discussion about gender identities, and wanted to restrict it to people who were accepting of trans people, but didn't want to hide it away in the Rainbow Room?

Can we do that?

Discussions are ongoing, I think!

I still campaign for calling it either 1) the Queer Only room or 2) MOGII (Marginalised Orientations, Gender Identities and Intersex) or maybe GSM (Gender and Sexual Minorities) although MOGII is more inclusive. It'd be a good chance to help mainstream such terms.

I think it would be worth posting a thread in site feeback for this to get their opinion. If your thinking of a specific group it may demonstrate a need for a subforum and the admins could well discuss that privately.

The interfaith forum may be appropriate as it was the "same faith" debates. But extending that beyond beliefs may be problematic as clearly the staff probably aren't going to want to promote a form of exclusion on the main forums because it conflicts with the forum mission about being a space for diverse views. A more practical reason is it makes their job that much harder trying to tell who can and cannot be part of a discussion when it isn't necessarily clear. So enforcing that kind of division will be difficult if not impossible for the mods depending on what you have in mind.

There were suggestions of a public LGBT subforum and this might just be a nudge to see if they want to go and do it.

I take your point regarding it as denying diversity in the public forums. But I guess I'm wondering how we might establish a bit of a more flexible system than having to make dedicated subforums all the time.

You can use the invitation only forums? I think I'm the only person whose ever used them.

I found it was worth including a unoffical rule that if people wanted to join in the debate they send you a PM or a profile post. Then you can tag them to say "you're in".

That certainly has a place. And maybe it could stand in. But I'm thinking something more free-form-DIR style, I guess, where it's a bit more open.

EDIT: Also, if discussions reopen r.e. the Queer DIR, I will campaign against calling it 'LGBT', because while it's a pretty good label and is recognisable, it is not sufficiently inclusive.

Yup.

I attend A.A. recovery meetings at least 5 X a week.
One meeting is for LGBT and ANY open minded
person in recovery.

I never miss that meeting and found my A.A. sponsor
there.
Sexual preference isn't discussed.
It's about staying sober and ALIVE!
I love those fine people.
Many straight people attend as the meeting is open
to all OPEN MINDED persons.
My fiance loves those people and she does not need
recovery.
She supports me.
She loves A.A. meetings and desire that the world
would attend.
There would be few conflicts if everyone followed
the 12 steps.
(arguable I know but so what?)

I think it should just be called LGBT or LGBTQ, because people know what the hell it means, no offense. Making it so vague could open it up to people into fetishes and things like that. It doesn't make clear which communities the focus is on.

I'd take some talking down, but I might eventually go for LGBT+. Although I still much prefer Queer, or just using a term like MOGAI - it's not like people won't click, see what it means and be like 'huh', and it helps mainstream a useful term.

Not everyone identifies as queer or wants that term applied to them. I identify as queer in terms of my sexual orientation and it means something specific to me, personally.

Yeah, I guess so. Terms are somewhat what we make of them, but I can get why some people don't like it.

On a more serious note, there might be some people who it wouldn't sit easy with. It could be a kind of homocisnormativity. Like, the rainbow flag has been the symbol for gay rights, historically. It hasn't always been waving just as much for non-gay, non-straight people, or for intersex people, or trans people.

But meh, maybe I'm paranoid.

You need to stay off Tumblr for a bit. Lol. You can't please everyone, so the best thing is try to please as many people as you reasonably can. Keep it recognizable and approachable. Otherwise we're just going to end up fracturing into squabbling factions and confusing people. I'm starting to see the same behavior with some people in the trans group I attend and it really irks me. The Rainbow Flag is the best symbol of diversity we currently have. It's usage has grown beyond just being a symbol of gay people.
