From my father, don't buy anything on credit except for a home mortgage. He used to save money each day for a car and only buy the car when he had enough. That's harder today but the lesson stuck with me and was really helpful for times when I was between jobs.

*One week's net for housing & expenses.
*One week's net for transportation & expenses.
*One week's net for essentials.
*One week's net for savings, entertainment, and non-essentials.

The above was my father's advice when I left home at 18. I didn't listen until my wake-up at 40. It worked very well and does so for my children who listened a little earlier, though they fought it. We all "want" what our peers achieve, but we don't all have the same hidden assets.

As far as buying or renting -- if you can't afford upkeep and improvements RENT. Owning property can be a steading anchor, or a drowning one.

Admit if you need help and have to reach out. Don't be too proud if you struggling sometimes you may have to go on food stamps or contact a friend for help. It's better to swallow your pride then go hungry.

That's not really advice on how to save or anything but what to do if you struggling to make ends meet. Oh and garbage dumps are gold mines sometimes I know folk who've furnished their living room that way and I got some nice shoes from there too.

Good advice! Nix that pride, or at least whittle it down without damaging your backbone. I once knew a young woman that was so proud that she was able to get a house for herself and her little girl without government help. It had one ceiling socket in each of the four rooms, no indoor plumbing, and she insulated the walls for winter with layers of newspaper.

Most places won't "allow" for that now, but never underestimate the feeling of achievement in this world! I love those bumper stickers on cars that say "Yeah, it's old and ugly, but it's paid for." What I say about my house is "no one else saw the beauty, and now she's mine."
