Riots in LA and Temple Square over Prop 8

This was an email from a friend at work:
LA Temple Protests
I’m in LA for WinHEC, and thought I’d go attend the 8:30PM temple session last night. I hopped on a bus in downtown LA, made a transfer in Westwood and was heading towards the temple. It was only at this time that I found out there could be some trouble up ahead on Santa Monica Blvd – an alert had come through to the bus driver’s terminal. Indeed, there was quite a crowd (about 2500 people) gathered in front of the temple, the police were out in force, and a helicopter was making wide circles over the temple and the protesters. I exited the bus about a block past the temple and made my way back to the visitor’s entrance. The police had done a good job of containing the protesters to the front of the temple on Santa Monica Blvd., and I was readily able to make my way there. The gates had been locked, and I spoke with the security guard who said they’d closed the temple about 12:30PM.

I decided to walk to Beverly Hills to grab some dinner, and about 5 minutes later, heard a loud series of shouts coming from behind me – the protesters were starting to march. LAPD had already started and was continuing the process of cordoning off a marching route. Westbound traffic had already been brought to a standstill. There was definitely a feeling of anger in air, and I double-timed it into town. That was the last I heard of the protesters, and the police must have contained them to the North Santa Monica Blvd. route, as I couldn’t even here them from downtown Beverly Hills. I walked down to Wilshire and hopped a bus back downtown about 10:30. Quite the evening!

Good lesson learned here – call ahead!

Here is a link about the protests at Temple Square.

That's right.

So were the women's right's movements and the civil rights movements of the 60's.

Just plain stupid.

These people have every right to protest.
Here we go again with the apples and oranges. It's just plain stupid.

Race is only skin deep and nature is ruthlessly practical. Nature needs the cooperation of both men and women in a coherent society, but it doesn't need homosexuals and society doesn't need to be encumbered by them. I know it sounds harsh and cold-hearted, but its reality.

Even if they should win in the short term, in the long term the activists will lose.

Society isn't an insect colony, although if we all had your mentality it would be.

That... well, that is simply not possible; acceptance of same sex marriage will happen.

But what I want to know is what exactly do you mean with this talk of "nature doesn't need to be encumbered by homosexuals". Since homosexuals do exist and in fact can't help but be what they are, it would seem that nature isn't trying to avoid homosexuality, thank you very much.

Besides, homosexuals are hardly an encumbrance. If anything, they are advantageous to society, since they are active citizens that in fact have their offspring with much more care and planning than other people.

I agree with that. In a hundred years people will look back at this time in history and wonder what all the fuss was about.

If we are going to trot out the argument that homosexuality is not natural, how come many animals exhibit homosexual behaviour?

i have no hate signs, i do not protest, It's pointless and only breeds more hate. my comments were only directed at those who consider themselves latter-day Saints and who should be abiding by the precepts of God.

This thread reminded me of a scripture:
2nd Nephi 28:
14 They wear stiff necks and high heads; yea, and because of pride, and wickedness, and abominations, and whoredoms, they have all gone astray save it be a few, who are the humble followers of Christ; nevertheless, they are led, that in many instances they do err because they are taught by the precepts of men.

16 Wo unto them that turn aside the just for a thing of naught and revile against that which is good, and say that it is of no worth! For the day shall come that the Lord God will speedily visit the inhabitants of the earth; and in that day that they are fully ripe in iniquity they shall perish.
19 For the kingdom of the devil must shake, and they which belong to it must needs be stirred up unto repentance, or the devil will grasp them with his everlasting chains, and they be stirred up to anger, and perish;

20 For behold, at that day shall he rage in the hearts of the children of men, and stir them up to anger against that which is good. 21 And others will he pacify, and lull them away into carnal security, that they will say: All is well in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth, all is well—and thus the devil cheateth their souls, and leadeth them away carefully down to hell.

22 And behold, others he flattereth away, and telleth them there is no hell; and he saith unto them: I am no devil, for there is none—and thus he whispereth in their ears, until he grasps them with his awful chains, from whence there is no deliverance.

Yet, you would be on the "Yes On 8" side if there was a "protest" or riot in your area, would you not? Did you hang a Yes On 8 sign on your home or in your car? Did you push the issue in your life anywhere?

That's hate. That's ignorance. That's bigotry.

This is an LDS DIR forum and what you posted will spark debate. You should leave.

Note: If I was going to debate you I'd point out that race is more than skin deep. One of my current professors looks for all intent and purposes to be white - but she's not. Also, while nature may not need homosexuals, nature certainly contributes to their existance. As a natural part of society and in a country founded on freedom and encompassing equal protection into its constitution, homosexuals deserve equal treatment under civil law.

If proposition 8 would have failed, the shoe would be on the other foot. You would have had LDS members taking to the streets to show their outrage at the failure of their beloved proposal which they had pumped millions of dollars into. It is all good to take away someone else's rights, as long as they don't mess with yours, I guess...
