Rise of the Planet of the Apes

I thought it was surprisingly good. I was honestly expecting mediocrity, if not something downright stupid, but I thought it was a very well-told story with (mostly) engaging characters. The action was good, growing out of the story and not really overstaying its welcome, and the chimp character of Caesar (played by Gollum) was VERY good.

There were also a lot of nice nods and send-offs to the original movie besides the obligatory "damn dirty ape" line (which, by the way, was BRILLIANTLY done here), so if you've seen it (and if you haven't, shame on you), you'll at least smile at those.

There were some problems, of course. The girlfriend was, sadly, deadweight, and the corporate guy was... well, the corporate guy from every other movie that character has been in since the 80s (well, okay, in the interest of fairness, he was better written and better acted in this one, but he's still just as two-dimensional). I don't count the not-science as a flaw, though, since science fiction is supposed to take absurd nonsense and make it look scientifically plausible within the context of the story, and they did it well here.

So, yeah, I recommend this movie.

I liked it. :D Ceaser reminded me of Baggins. And I thought "this is why I can't let anyone babysit Baggins... because they might abuse him." And then Baggins might train the other weenies to start a revolt, and they'd start killing people. and then one of them would be like "imma kill Hannah, because she's a human just like those other dick-wads." But then Baggins would be like "no... Not her. She's my mommy." And they'd run off to live in the trees, but I'd go with them, because Baggins is my rock.

Don't argue with the monkeys, you can't reason with them and you'll just end up with ****** on your clothes. Go straight to exterminating them. *sound advice*

I think the most apt comparison with previous movies is Spartacus, since this is a movie about an uprising leading towards a revolution. As ludicrous as the context seem to be, I found it easy to go along with the theme because the plot and the characters in the movie are internally consistent.
