As for the consequences for Rittenhouse... I think the expression is "play stupid games, win stupid prizes." As a 17-year-old fed with right-winger rhetoric, he may not have had a clear idea of just how serious the consequences could be of playing soldier in the middle of a riot, but I'm sure he heard that old adage "better judged by 12 than carried by 6" enough times to know that killing a few people will probably end up with you judged by 12.
