rolling dice to decide the course of your life?

I have a large collection of dice, with various different numbers of sides

Should I make life choices based on rolling them?

I know this would be stupid as doing so would amount to randomising my life and I wouldn't want to do that......

And that doing so wouldn't be actually making choices........

But there must be people out there who do that?

I know people who make minor life choices that way. (which restaurant should I go to, should I do the dishes or vacuum, do I want to see a movie or go ice skating, etc) Might be fun for that, but anything major should have a bit more thought...

That's what I was thinking, I thought I could use my dice to resolve minor choices when doing so without them would be hard

Many people use Tarot cards daily to tell them how to live their life, dice would be a similar concept and sounds like a fun way to make some decisions in your life. Maybe just don't let the dice take over and make ALL of your decision. ;)

I tried that once.

I rolled craps.

Then I had to go to the bathroom.

Yes. Hi.

But it's not as simple as that. Like any form of divination, it's mainly an introspective tool. Your gut reaction to what the percentile rolls tells you what you should and shouldn't do based on who and what you are. It's a tool to think more critically about what you're doing.

My family likes to start up Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. ultimate, rename the characters as the restaurants in question, set them all to CPU, then let the fight begin.

the winner is where we go to eat.

You can even adjust the difficulty level of each place to account for the popularity of it.

Why not?
Sometimes it can be useful to bring variety into your life. And humans are bad randomizers, you'll inevitably fall into a pattern. You become predictable. Maybe you don't want to have that.

Gaius allegedly did before crossing the Rubicon. "Alea iacta est."

It's not at all a stupid or silly idea to me. Life being what it is and all that.

Maybe if I lived a more buttoned down lifestyle where I had a nuclear family and a sturdy but conscientious and delicate career, I'd be signing a different tune but that isn't the case. I guess it all comes down to what your goals and values are and what your attitude towards those things is.

If you happen to struggle with avoidance and/or making decisions, I could see the value in such a practice - something along the lines of "well, the dice said so, so I'll have to do it."

On this topic, I'm pretty sure there's a novel out there that is based on this exact premise, except that the dice were more instructive and specific rather than just normal 1-6 numbered dice. I have absolutely no idea what the title of that novel was - a friend told me about it about 15 years ago and that was literally the only detail about the novel that I remember when my friend was telling me all about it.

As I see it, it's just another form of divination.

It can make a lot of sense to use dice to make certain decisions.

Sometimes we just don't have enough reliable information to decide properly. Sometimes there is an emotional toll that would be best avoided. Sometimes there is fun in dealing with the uncertainty (and little risk from making the wrong decisions). Sometimes there is no information whatsoever to decide!

I like how you typically know exactly what decision you really want, deep down, while the coin is still up in the air.

Not really, i only do it when choice doesn't really matter.
Eg.
Walk through the forest - or - walk along the river.
Shop at LeClerc supermarket - or - Carrefour supermarket.
Chicken - or - beef.
That sort of thing

Once in a while you should make a decision on a roll or whim. It will open your life to new experiences and allow you to grow. Staying with the logical, safe and conventional choices will cause you to stagnate. I personally do it once or twice a year with no ill effects. However, it is not for everyone, if you get anxiety from this or it causes you stress that will make your life worse than by all means avoid it. As it is random there is no way to guaranty it will benefit you all the time.
