MOSCOW, Jan. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Russia on Friday welcomed the possible resumption of dialogue between Palestine and Israel, saying the effort will contribute to start moving towards peace inthe Middle East based on the "road map" plan.
"We hope that the resumption of dialogue between the Israelis and Palestinians will enable the parties to restore trust, normalize the situation, and again start moving towards peace based on the 'road map' plan," said Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko.
Israel recently announced its willingness to resume dialogue, and preparations for a meeting between Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon are underway now.
The Russian spokesman praised the positive measures, including reforming the PNA bodies and curbing extremist activities, taken by Abbas and also welcomed the active response made by Israel.
Yakovenko noted that during Abbas' expected visit to Russia on January 31, Russian officials will discuss with him the ways to resume the "road map" peace process and the Middle East situation.
