Do we have anyone on RF who practices Santeria? I would really love to learn more about the religion and especially how it's practiced. What rituals are performed and how are they carried out?

I dont but I became interested when I spoke with a Babalow, Santero, and Santera about the religion. Its Highly secretive and foriegn (if you arent familiar with Central African and Cuban culture).

Are you in the states? Find a Botanica store (they sell ritual items-only bought by followers. They have general metaphysics. Readings.) Look up the stores in your state. I dont know about other countries.

You will need a reading to let you know if the Orishas (spirits, loosely translated) tell you if you are ready to follow the faith. Its highly expensive.

The best practice for all people interested is devotion to your ancestors. Light a white candle morning and evening, and specifically in Santeria, they sometimes say Catholic prayers, Lords Prayers, etc. (Edit) Once you get really serious and have a godparent, I believe they give you Lucumi (the parent religion language) prayers.

Here is a nice site. The internet will not have spells, rituals, etc from the religion.

Its not modern witchcraft, nor folk (not in Europe) but folk rituals from Africa.

I havent met anyone interested in the religion on this site. One santero posted once and left. Guess they figure people dont take it seriously.

Talk with someone in person.

I find African folk religion fascinating. I love learning about their ritual style, and although I know it's not considered witchcraft, it has the metaphysical aspects of magical practice. For those of us who do practice the Arts, the rituals of African, Caribbean, and Oceanic folk religions can be a very interesting and useful area of study but very little information is available about them. It's a shame we don't have any practitioners of Santeria on here, their ways of communing with the ancestors and Orishas, as well as their use of common items in ritual, is one I feel that any serious practitioner of the Arts could learn from.

Its a rich culture, I agree.

Sad to say but understandable, no honest Santera or any follower and initiate will tell the rituals and practices of their faith. You can, though, learn about general African traditions such as the means of animal sacrifice and how they view the creator. The theological side is orally told within the religion through stories.

Im just relaying what I was told and learned. If I followed, Id have the same respect to not share rituals of my community.

Its one of those faiths you cant get around. As for ancestral practice, that too is ritual/community based. You might can ask a santero. They may tell you about how to commune with your ancestors. But if not a follower (if the Orishas haven't chosen you) there is but so much you can do.

My first step is talk to a followers and get a reading.
