Sarkozy: Netanyahu's a liar. Obama: I have to deal with him every day

Why does Obama says he has to deal with him every day? Or is Netanyahus representatives, AIPAC, that he has to deal with?

You know, the same AIPAC that made congress clap for Netanyahu (president of a foreign country) after every other sentence he said? as if it were the Syrian parliament with no choice but to clap for Bashar Al Assad to keep their positions. Many even questioned Biden for not clapping at the end of his speech, and "being slow to applaud" during the speech?

So I can see why he has to "deal with him every day".

Nicolas Sarkozy was plunged into a diplomatic storm today after describing the prime minister of Israel as a liar.

The remark about Benjamin Netanyahu was made privately to President Obama at the G20 summit but was picked up by a radio microphone. "I can't bear to see him any more, he's a liar," Mr Sarkozy said in French.

Mr Obama's reply was almost as embarrassing. "You may be sick of him, but me, I have to deal with him every day."

The pair were caught out in just the same way as Gordon Brown during the last general election when he was overheard describing a woman voter as a "bigot".

Their microphones were left running after a press conference as they retired to a private room during the summit in Cannes where world leaders had gathered to try to sort out the economic crises.

The exchange was accidentally overheard by journalists listening on headphones who agreed to a demand from the French president's office to keep the remarks private.

However, hints of the conversation gradually leaked out and they were finally published in full this morning in Jerusalem papers.

The incident happened after Mr Obama used the meeting to upbraid Mr Sarkozy for voting in favour of the recent Palestinian bid for full membership of the UN cultural organisation, Unesco. Israel and America fiercely opposed it.

A day after the conversation, Mr Sarkozy made comments that were supportive of Israel.

He condemned Iran's nuclear programme and vowed that France would act if Israel's security is threatened. In the past, Mr Sarkozy has hinted that France could recognise Palestinian statehood without waiting for a comprehensive peace agreement. He has, however, fully supported the two-state solution that requires Israel to be secure.

One French journalist told the website Arrêt Sur Images that the conversation was picked up for around three minutes before officials realised the mistake. A spokesman for Mr Netanyahu declined to comment on the report.

David Cameron's spokesman said Mr Netanyahu was "an important partner" in Middle East issues but that Britain did not agree with him on everything.

"We think Israel needs to stop settlement building and return to talks," he said.

"But the Prime Minister considers him [Netanyahu] to be an important partner in managing critical regional issues."

When I heard of this latest tempest in a teapot I mused what Nicolas Sarkozy might say about Obama and vice versa, given a similar opportunity. It's not like Obama commands much respect on the world stage, the office of the US President, sure, but the man, um, not so much.

That said, I'd be a bit wary of being praised by one such as Sarkozy. If I were Netanyahu, I'd be inclined to take his remarks with a few boxes of salt.

Politicians are all liars. Netanyahu is no different. They don't dislike him because he's a liar-- they're also liars. They dislike him because he's a d***. Which he is.

If they really think that would embarrass the guy: I really don't think they've been talking to him on a daily basis.

Oddly, my low opinion of Sarkozy and Obama has actually been slightly improved by this story. They think they're people! How cute!

Meh, I'm not surprised.
Politicians are two faced and liars by default.

Although if you're going to talk about someone, at least have the damn sense to check your microphone is off. Or even hold your thumb over it. :D

I don't think this the issue at all. these incidents and 'gossiping' seems to be pretty much a standard. considering what some of the European politicians might be caught or overheard saying about each other. many of these politicians when gradually come to face, even partially with the schedule of an Israeli PM make a U-turn on issues they previously criticised Israel about.
the whole settlement issue for example is a joke. Israel will continue the construction as it always has, and the European, or even Obama's criticism of the construction is nothing but lip service. Israel's governments are not going to change decades long policies because European or the Obama administrations wish to be politically correct towards the Arab league.

Most professional mics (the wired variety, anyhow) don't have on/off switches. And switching off your wireless mic is a good way to get an angry sound technician after you, because the technical crew don't generally trust the talent to turn their mics back on when they need them. :)

But a good general rule of thumb that I'm surprised Sarkozy and Obama didn't realize: *every* mic is potentially live. Even if you can't hear it yourself, it could be going to a TV feed, a backstage monitor, a technician's headphones, or a recorder surreptitiously hooked up to a sound board.

Heh, that sucks. :D

Still, if you're gonna insult someone behind their backs, your best bet is to upset the sound man instead.. isn't it? :D

Obama should tell us what he really thinks.

I suspect that would be he does not want to support Israel on any level.
