I don't know what it is, but for some reason it peeves me to hear, "Gotta get my kid in the right school."
You find out you're pregnant, first words out of a person's mouth is' "What schools have you signed up for?" They mean your baby, not you.
There are waiting lists at some of these preschools. In fact, at some, you need to plan when you are having you kid so that you don't get pushed further down the list you have already signed up on.

What is this about 'getting into the right school;? It's not like it's a guarantee that you are going to Yale or Harvard. It's just a school.
Maybe I just don't get it.

There's nothing wrong with catching up, or keeping up, with the Joneses -- making it important enough to even be aware of is the problem.

Probably for the best. Mr. Jones is sleeping with the maid and Mrs. Jones spends more time getting her hair done than raising her children. To hell with the Joneses! And while we're on the subject, To hell with fancy schools!

I disagree. Some schools (if not many) have well-deserved bad reputations for not providing even the most basic education due to overcrowding, poor management, over-worked and under-paid teachers, and students who are completely uninterested in success (eg., motivated by parents who care about their education).

This is almost exclusively determined by the social status of the folks who fund the school - at least in Texas - and I suspect elsewhere. Many schools in the ghettos have no textbooks or writing materials - much less no science or computer labs - and no discipline in the home.

On top of that, there are complete morons in control of education in Texas, so our kids are bound to learn abstinance only and a heap of lies about politics and history. One can have a little chat with school administration here to see if the ISD is actually going to teach that crap.

I want my kid to learn Greek (all dialects), French, German, and Latin and speed reading so he can keep up with his old man. And music (piano, violin, and baritone), art (expressionist fingerpainting), and fine dining (graham crackers, boogers, and PlayDough).

I don't know... I imagine having my own kid that I would be the one teaching 'pre-school'. I figured we would start off with Being and Nothingness.

It may be that way for some.

For the rest it is more the "my kid needs to do better than I did" syndrom.

We figured we would be supplimenting our kids public education at home anyways, so "what school they would go to" only involved putting them on the waiting list for the public school closest to our home.

A ten minute walk as opposed to an hour and a half on the school bus.

Perhaps you run with too fast a crowd. I never hear talk of which is the right school until we're talking about college.
I can understand it then, but even so I don't put much stock in the school making the student.

At the k-12 level, 'good-school' is a misnomer. That's because in those levels, the school admissions are based on geographic proximity to the specific schools. And since 'good-schools' are more likely to be in affluent and wealthy neighborhoods with more property tax money and funding to perpetuate its 'good' status, the virtue of you being able to send your kid to a 'good-school' most likely means you yourself are likely to be relatively middle-class, affluent, or even wealthy. And it's those factors that contributes to a child's likelihood to do better. Although, as you've mentioned, it's not a guarantee. It only increases the likelihood.
