Science and Religion not compatible.

They exist well together in the dictionary. I think there is room enough in this universe for both of them to both exist in the hearts and minds of humanity.

They're often quite compatible. I'm religious and I believe that science is the best method we have to learn about the Universe/Nature.

In my opinion they're perfectly compatible. Science tells us how the world works, but it's not as good at answering to ethical, spiritual and philosophical questions. I don't mean science doesn't teach us a lot, but it still leaves room for spirituality and sense of awe. Not everything has to be taken literally either. I practice magic, for example. Intellectually I know that there are no such things as supernatural forces, but while in a ritual setting I can "bend the rules" for psychological reasons (something which hypnotism also uses). For something to be meaningful it doesn't have to be objectively true - as long as you remember it's subjective.

Here I'm of course only speaking for myself. I'm sure there are many that disagree with me on the matter.

Religion is not just literal mythology. The two can easily exist side by side, because religion is not necessarily made of statements about reality, but rather expressions of ourselves.

What is your guys opinion on the compatibility of science and religion?
Science shows us that there is no scientific evidence for a supernatural God. So it is hard to see any compatibility between the two, unless your religion is all natural and does not claim to know God and its mystical ways.

I don't see how science debunks my religion. If anything, it teaches me more about that which I worship.

Hear hear! My pursuit of a science career is directly related to a religious impetus to study the gods. I like studying the gods through mysticism and storytelling too, but that can't exactly pay the bills.

In the long run science debunks religion though. If one of the two become very big doesnt the other automatically become small?
Einstein would certainly disagree. Stephen Hawking has even said that science does not prove or disprove god. Science is to help us learn about us, our world, and the universe. Religion is much more personal, and deals with questions about existence, not just how our existence functions. They are very much compatible indeed.

What is your guys opinion on the compatibility of science and religion?
What is the opinion of science about the Sermon on the Mount? or about the Song of Solomon? what is science's take on the Hávamál or the Tao Te Ching?
If one reduces religion to pure literalism and the question of historicity or naturalism of Biblical, Eddic, or Vedic texts... then of course science cannot be compatible with religion.
The questions is, why would someone deny themselves of so many layers and dimensions to explore or benefit from?

Einstein would certainly disagree. Stephen Hawking has even said that science does not prove or disprove god.
Let’s not forget, good old Albert also said this:
“It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it.”
Albert Einstein

And in his “the Grand Design” Hawking says that science can explain the universe, and that we don't need God to explain why there is something rather than nothing or why the laws of nature are what they are.

They're compatible to a point.

A difficult comes because while self-respecting religion ought to acknowledge and learn from science, there are several that have trouble dealing with independent confirmation.

Also, there is the matter that as scientific knowledge becomes better and more abrangent, the field of relevancy for religion diminishes. It seems to me that there is a practical limit to that effect, however.
