Pride and Arrogance
In my opinion, writings in religions are only as important to set the characters and places in your specific religion. Some religions have books that contain hundreds of edicts and rules, other religions have a few books that tell you the name of the gods and people and a few stories.

Many people in modern times are religious in their own world. What I mean by that is their interpretation is usually based on their own morals and opinions but is rooted in an old religion. This makes sense to me and is what most religions will go to in the next few hundred years. Christianity has already been taking that route. The only religion I can think of right now that has tried to deflect from this is Islam and that has been taking a lot of flack because modern morals do not allow killings and other in my opinion barbaric practices. Though there are medical practices like male circumcision that pervade modern society due to its 'origin' in Judaism and by extension Christianity.

In real Islamic teaching, as understood and practiced by Ahmadiyya-Muslim [alislamDOTorg], above such killing is not present.

Though not sure, but perhaps you might want to read:
Crime and punishment
Principle of, 76, 77
Crimes against society, 63, 74, 110, 158, 159, 237, 238, 239

I believe there is another and more important aspect to religion than the rules and historical stories found in ancient scriptures and writings. It is the individual's goal for internal spiritual peace found through brotherly love and compassion and detachment from excessive material desires. Already in modern times, especially in the most economically advanced world, we see a movement towards 'spiritual but not religious'. The old structured approach is not needed by people educated to think for themselves, but a longing for spiritual peace and joy is inherent in man.
