Secret NRA Tapes after Columbine

Guitar's Cry

Disciple of Pan
A secret tape made after Columbine shows the NRA's evolution on school shootings

"Thirteen people lay dead at a high school in Colorado. More than 20 were injured. Images of students running from the school were looped on TV. The NRA strategists on the call sounded shaken and panicked as they pondered their next step into what would become an era of routine and horrific mass school shootings."

It's an interesting read, and obviously has political significance with America's continuing balancing act between gun rights and gun violence.

I am 35, and I remember when that happened. I can't remember if some teacher or school staff worker gave us all a talk about it, but probably. I seem to remember there was a a lot of shock from the teachers and my fellow 7th graders, regarding that

Nowadays people are probably more inured to it, and it doesn't stir reactions.

If that is true, that is horrific. I think a societal state where this is normal is pretty bad, and in a way, it might be a worse state of things than you find in various 'undeveloped' areas

For example, think about tribal people, living in the remote parts of the world. I suspect that in a tight knit situation like that, there is no room for anti-social individuals to develop in the way that they do in our world. So they fix those people, or ostracize them from the tribe. But chances are, they can't even get that far, because everyone has to work together to much for individuals to start getting too anti-social

In our society, it seems this problem will just keep going on, without serious socio-structural overhaul?

I heard the report on NPR radio. They played the actual recordings. Fascinating to hear what was going on as a "fly on the wall". They knew they were in a no-win scenario. But that was all their doing by pandering to the far right.

That last sentence could also be changed to...
But that was inevitable, given the left's
commitment to gutting the 2nd Amendment.

BTW, I heard it on NPR too.
It was interesting how uncontroversial it was.

If only they addressed bullying sooner.
