Seekers who have found what they were seeking

I'm curious who here came onto the board because they were seeking. Did you decide on a religion, and if so, which one?

My journey has never been about seeking, per se, although seeking seems to be the general mode I have settled into. For me, it wasn't about getting answers, it was all about confirmation and that I wasn't alone in what I had stumbled onto. So, for me, since we will always continue to learn, seeking, in those terms, will never end, nor would I want it to. In a twist on the idea, I'm looking for new questions to ask, the answers I'll find along the way are merely gravy.

In regards to given religions of the human animal, I am too far down my road to submit to what I deem to be the comparative playthings designed for spiritual toddlers. An expression I coined right here on RF sums up my thinking well.

"They all have their crumbs, but their loaves have long since turned to dust."

Sat srii akaal!

I am a little bit in the middle here in that I was initially decently sure of what I was looking for religion-wise, but wasn't totally committed to a specific religious path. Eventually I found Sikhism after some time studying Islam and Buddhism, and here I've stayed. I intend to undertake amrit (Sikh baptismal rites) soon.

This says it for me also. It's not so much about seeking, but sorting out beliefs, and finding that there are others like me who tend to syncretize what some people think are incompatible beliefs, but really are not.

Me too, I didn't come here to seek. I already was sure of my belief.

But I have learned a tremendous amount here and it has confirmed my faith and made me feel more confident if people ask me about it.

What about you Thirza Fallen?

I was interested in Judaism when I came here, but hadn't made a concrete decision yet. I found this site through a google search looking for articles on Judaism. Between the people here and the information in the DIR, I finally decided to work up the nerve to talk to the local rabbi.

I completed the conversion process and was called to the Torah for the first time earlier this year.

Well, I am new here, but while I have been a Christian for 25 years, I have recently been interested in the adding of Buddhism into my daily life. So I guess I have added another aspect to my already existing religion.

That is really nice!

^ Sounds like Syncretism, I've always done that, just so long as the concepts don't contradict each other.

Yep, that's what I was referring to about "sorting out" beliefs and practices. Sometimes it's not easy and takes a lot of :banghead3 before you come away with something meaningful.

Oh yes, no doubt, It was years, frankly, before I had read enough to really understand certain religious concepts across a spectrum of sources/beliefs.

Nope haven't found my path yet, but it's only been a few years since I've become a theist and it's only been... A little over a year? since I've been here.

Tbh even though I guess I'd count as a 'seeker' (probably more so of philosophy than religion), I started posting on religious forums (and eventually only this one) because years ago at the time, my boyfriend was posting on one and I joined too since I was curious about what what was so interesting about a religious forum. :areyoucra

I don't really seek anything in particular; I just find it interesting to talk to people. Talking about religion or philosophy is harder to do with people in normal settings like at work or with friends.

No, I haven't really settled on a religion, although I do have my own beliefs and practices, and identify myself as an eclectic solitary animist. It allows me to be more adaptable, I think... ;)

What I'm particularly seeking is peoples' accounts of their spiritual experiences...not so much their thoughts about their experiences, not so much their beliefs--although I'll generally listen to those, to...at least to be polite. But I'm interested in hearing about what people have experienced. Those stories--at least to me--mean much more than all the theorizing and philosophizing and debate. I don't think they'll lead me to a religion, but I do like to hear about what people encounter during their own lives...

I was sure I was Christian. Came here looking for other non-trinitarians. Turns out, I was a Muslim all along (alhamdulillah!)

I admire Muslims greatly and there are times when I wish I could be a Muslim, but there is little chance I could ever convert to Islam.

I'm curious, why do you feel you couldn't convert to Islam? I personally felt this way for a while. But since my conversion I can tell you I feel totally at peace.

Speaking for myself, I felt the same as him - greatly admire Muslims - converted (not sure that was done properly) on a whim before but...

-I can't stand the segregation.
-I don't agree with having to pray in Arabic, I don't see the point and God should understand anyone praying from the heart.
-Some of Muhammad's character is in question and I can't find definitive answers that aren't biased.
-I'm too liberal, no matter how you put it, I'll never agree with things like gender roles or anti-homosexuality or hate the sin (imo, love and sex goes hand in hand, unreasonable to expect everyone homosexal to abstain).
-My husband is not Muslim and never will be.
-Eternal Hell. Enough said!
-I very much dislike the Hadith, I find they cause a lot of problems and overwrites what the Quran says in many cases. Proof is in this thread.
-I believe in a different concept of Higher Being that's different from the various God described in Abrahamic religions.

I've heard explanations of some of those, but it didn't help since I disagree. It's not that I didn't try to see the other side, just that it doesn't feel right. Sure I suppose I could be a Quran only Muslim, but still can't ignore things like lashings and certain things like no interest is pretty much impossible to do in this society, etc. I'd have to bend the religion so much, I don't think it would be Islam anymore.

But I'm glad Islam works for you, I wish I could have certainty on chosing path. :D
