Selling your soul to the Devil.

Selling your soul to the Devil is an old concept. Often seen in stories.

What do you know about such pacts when it comes to real life?

I believe I have sold my soul to the Devil.

In return for my complacency, He offers me a life of “normalcy”. In return for my refusal to believe in all things spiritual and metaphysical, He gives me the hope for unconsciousness upon death. In return for rejecting my ambitions and ideals, He prolongs my life.

This is the deal I have made with Him. Every time I take my antipsychotics, it is a victory for the Devil, for I cloud my vision to reality.

The Devil isn't really part of my religion, but as usual the cultural influence of Christianity means I can't not know something about it, for better or worse. Plus, since Pagans get conflated with "devil worshipers" in some circles you end up knowing more about it than you'd like as a Pagan to be able to dramatically roll your eyes at others and correct them (mostly) politely.

As I understand it, some Christians (not that many in my experience - religious tolerance is the default these days) more or less believe that worship and devotion to any gods other than theirs means you are worshiping a devil or a demon. Pagans and Witches in particular are believed to have made "pacts" with them to get their magical powers. They have a whole ream of stories they tell about how we allegedly make these pacts, little of which bears any resemblance to our actual ritual practices... but hey, they're the authors of these stories, not us Pagans. There's this lovely (sarcasm) historical book called the Malleus Maleficarum that goes into it in some detail. I've not read it. Not sure I want to. It is a hateful book from a hateful age.

I'm sorry you feel that way.

Are they distorting your vision of reality? Or are they restoring your clarity so you are seeing reality as it actually is, and not just as it is in your head?

It has always been my understanding, the term "selling your soul to the Devil" was code for using drugs to become successful. A lot of people in the entertainment industry (musicians, comedians, etc) are only good when they are under the influence of drugs. The devil is the drugs because eventually it all catches up to them and it will either kill them, or if they ever get off the drugs, they are not as good when they are sober thus their career will be over. When someone says "this guy is good, but he sold his soul to the devil" they are saying he is only good because he is under the influence of drugs and it won't last
