Djamila
Bosnjakinja
Sevdah means 'Passion' and it is the official music genre of Bosniaks, Bosnian Muslims. Sevdah is closely related to Portuguese Fado, a modern genre of music with musical links to old Portuguese Jewish folk music.
Sevdah music is slightly more popular in Bosnia than you would expect folk music to be. Many downtown cafes play sevdah and sevdah artists like Hanka Paldum are among Bosnia's most famous (or infamous) celebrities.
The style of music usually features a single male or female vocal, and their voice leads the tempo of the song. The lyrics are almost always sad, about Romeo and Juliet style love stories.
Here is a sample of this beautiful and rare style of music, a song called 'Cudna jada od Mostara grada', which means basically 'Sad in Mostar'. You will get to see as well Bosnia's folk costumes, how men and women dressed here from the 1400s until the modern era.
