SHODAN
The Many
I've been thinking about transhumanism again, mostly out of my disgust for the present state of humanity and how stupid a species we tend to be. I'm a big cyberpunk fan (thanks to the Matrix) and this theme comes up a lot in it. Anyway, in System Shock 2, I find both Shodan, the AI, and the Many, the parasitic hivemind, presenting compelling cases for their sides. Both are ultimately radical authoritarians who wish to enforce order over chaos (reminding me of the Order of the Gash from the Hellraiser universe), but offer competing viewpoints. Shodan despises biological organisms, preaching the merits of overcoming the limits of biological existence and the Many rejoice in the flesh, its warmth and the unity of the hivemind.
Which do you think is ultimately better? Become a cybernetic deity or join the Many and achieve salvation in the unity? Make your choice, insect.
