Should a business be allowed to censor wifi on a religious basis?

I'm at a Hardee's at the moment. I decided to log into my favorite LHP forums and got this message:

I'm pretty sure, that since this is a public space (since they invite the public in) they can't or at least shouldn't be allowed to censor things purely out of religious bias. After all they can't deny service to black people or Jews or whatever.

I've already been finding out who to contact to figure out what their corporate policies are on this, since I have the feeling it's a store owner thing since I've seen Christian pamphlets in here in the past and I know they allow them.

Also interestingly some big name satanist websites are not blocked. In any case, ya. What do you think? I think they shouldn't and that it's censorship and despicable.

Edit: Worth mentioning, but I wouldn't of went in other than there was Wifi, I did purchase things because I figured I might as well get something to eat and they ask you to leave if you use the wifi without buying anything (not that it's ever happened to me personally). So I did, in fact, pay for a service. It's part of their business model to attract people in. It's not a "free" service, since it's part of their strategy to make more money.

If a movie theatre gave out popcorn to movie goers with no extra charge, should they be allowed to deny popcorn on the basis of race or religion? I'd think not.

It's worth mentioning that in cases of large companies providing anything to enhance the experience at a business they they are subject to certain regulations that anyone else would be even if they don't charge specifically for it. For example if they play even a local radio station they need to pay copyright royalties.

Probably has less to do with their management and more that they configured their Merkai security appliance to block ALL objectionable content. However, it's less likely Hardee's made that decision and more likely that they simply asked their administrators to block all questionable content and they ticked the "maximum" setting. OS certainly isn't a cult, but Occult.. yeah...

OpenDNS does similar with its cloud DNS product which is another one that allows these blanket categorical blocks. (This is popular and commonly used in smb) Wouldn't be surprised if OS is on theirs soon enough as well. Anyway, there is not much you can do with it or about it. It's not the owners it's the block lists they subscribe to.

Besides, if I were going to pick who to **** off and who not to I'd pick a bunch of edge lords over a bunch of family people. Just saying... it's all about the math... lol

It's their WiFi. Unless you pay for it, your a guest.

Their wifi their right to censor. One does not go to Hardee's for the wifi. It is a free service they offer. Since they probably want to appear family friendly they block potentially offending sites.

But I did pay for it, with my buisness. They give access to wifi as part of their service since they know people will come to purchase food as well.

If a movie theater gave out free popcorn so that more people would pay for their movies, could they deny someone popcorn because they are black or Jewish?

No, it's a public space since they invite the public in. It is not free since it's part of a business model to bring more customers in to purchase food.

Are muslims not family friendly? Should they block Muslim sites?

Keep in mind they allow Christian pamphlets in their store, maybe I forgot to mention I've seen them around and they said they are allowed.

Rather poor analogies. There is no promise of access to everything. And they are giving everyone the same access. Your race analogy fails as well.

As a corporation, they probably just crank the censorship to the max simply to cover any potential liability/image concerns.

Pretty much the same "you serve the public, you serve the public" type of argument. If you ban one religious site, you need to ban them all. Or, in reverse, if you allow one you have to allow them all.
As for "it's their wifi," that is true, but just because it's "their building" doesn't mean they can legally discriminate based on a range of items that are legally defined.

Hardly.. An anonymous bot keeps people off of certain sties. Hardee's is not the business of selling WifFi. If that was the case the OP might have a case. It is simply a courtesy. They don't have to give full coverage. There is no moral or legal obligation to do so.
