Should people be segregated depending on their religion?

For one, a community of like minded people could probably do a lot of good, but on the other hand, any trouble could create an all out neibourhood religious war!

I just can't see segregating on the basis of religion. Too many problems have come about from that between regions and areas anyway. Better to be integrated than to have history's mistakes be repeated.

Religious groupings seem to segregate them selves or form Ghettoes It gives them a sense of strength and community.
The problem is it separates them from the mainstream and shows their differences.
People do not care for strong groups who are different to them in the larger community, and always seems to lead to trouble.
Much better is dispersal an assimilation.

Look at Ireland - or rather, don't..............

Mind you - that has now gone way beyond religion; it is hard-wired. I remember seeing pictures of five year olds being involved in 'playing at being I.R.A members' - that is frightening.....I agree Terry, "Much better is dispersal and assimilation" .:)

I'm just curious...when you ask 'Should people be segregated depending on their religion?', are you talking about some kind of government action or people seperating themselves by reducing their interacting with people of other religions?

People who have similar ___________ (fill in the blank with whatver you want) tend to congregate and sometimes isolate themselves from other people because there's something comfortable about being surrounded with the familiar. Some segregation is natural because of human nature.

Over time, I don't think it's healthy for the intellect or the human spirit for people to segregate themselves depending on religion. IMHO, you learn more from interacting with people different from yourself with regard to ___________ . Once again, fill in the blank as you see fit. :)

This is a troublesome question. Hominids are hard-wired to function optimally in small, homogenous bands -- and to compete against other bands for resources. Yet in a modern civilization huge numbers of diverse people have suddenly been forced to intermingle in an unnatural and psychologically stressful melange. As PC as it may be to "celebrate diversity" it is psychologically unnatural. People crave small homogenous groups and eagerly separate themselves into religious, political, lifestyle and ethnic groups, clubs and gangs.

You are right Seyorni. When I was in Africa, I went to school; I have little memory of the sizes of the classroms, but I do remember that the black children were in a minority.

When we went to play in the playground, who did we gravitate to ? - the whites gravitated to the whites, and the Africans to their own.

This was NOT because our parents had told us to do that, we did it out of sheer human nature (I am talking primary school here - no preconceptions, no chance of being judgemental) - the reason was that other white children liked to play the same games as I did. As with the Africans - they gravited to their own kind, because they related to them - their culture, their games....................:)

I think I might be forgiven for accusing those who constantly fight against segregation to consider that it is often a self fulfilling facet of human nature.:)

Sometimes I think it would be great for the religious right to make their own country, where they could criminalize abortion and birth control and all that. Then I wouldn't have to worry about being ruled by their law.

I don't think we should segregate people by religion...in fact, I don't even like the idea of one religion dominating in an area.

I live in Utah right now, and you always hear people complaining..."I can't wait to get out of here and move somewhere else!" I have this attitude also, and it isn't because I hate Mormons (I am one after all!)...

I believe that diversity of religion actually helps people to practice their own. For me, it was much easier to tell a friend who was not of my faith that I didn't do something than it was to tell someone of my own faith. It takes away the, "I can't, I'm Mormon..." excuse and the peer pressure can be a lot stronger.

When you are put in a position of representing your religion around people who are not of the same faith, I believe you set higher standards in your own life. Defending your faith and answering/pondering the "tough" questions helps your faith grow and helps you learn. This may be a reason that many people come to this board.

I experienced the minority side as a Mormon living in Germany. The area I lived in was overwhelmingly Luthern (Evagelical) and I hated being a minority. I really felt like people treated me differently. I was told at a bank that I couldn't open a savings account because they "didn't want to be affiliated with our organization." I talked with friends who actually lost jobs and were kicked out of their apartment because they did not conform to the dominate religion.

I loved growing up in Washington, one of the most religiously diverse areas I know of. You could live your faith, and nobody really cared. In fact, people actually respected people of faith, even if they did not agree with it. People are afraid of things they don't understand, and you will never understand something you are not confronted with.

Are you serious ? All I would need is a community of mes ... I would be postal within the week . Or we would be ???

Sorry , but in my opinion , we WILL NEVER learn to live together by living apart . { although being apart at times is good , for awhile } .
