Should there be a one world goverment?

Ideally, yes.
Realistically, no.
Different peoples disagree on the scope and role of government, so I just don't think it is feasible.

Heya orichalcum,

My ideal world would include a one world government. I would want such a thing to happen slowly and surely though (like the forming of a European super state for example) rather than as an overnight thing because otherwise it wouldn't work, in my opinion.

Just think... a world without countries is a world without war and poverty. Plus a socialism might become more viable then which would be nice.

no because the only way a one world government could possibly work in a world so different and diverse and who can't get along would be one w/ an iron fist

I disagree, althogh there will always be people who want more than others, one race of many minds built on compassion could be the antidote to our greedy, egotistical world.

The theory is fine, but we have seen that Europe can't agree on the constitution - like Jewscout says, you'd have to have a strong dictatorship for it to work. That would be dangerous.:)

There are several problems in the relm of economics and the environment that a one world government would be in a better position to address than the many governments we now have.

Dangerous to who though? If the world is one there will be no war.

the problem is how many of us see ourselves as "one race"...maybe in a kum-by-yah image we could say "Oh we're all part of the human race"...but that, i believe, is not the place the human race is at right now, much like Marx's ideas on communism are tied to a belief that man can "rise above" a desire to have more than the person next to them.
yes if the whole human race decided to listen to our better parts and wanted to be compassionate and understanding and all the rest, hell why have governments at all in that case? the point is we are still fighting amongst ourselves and the only way a single world government could ever truely have control and order would be for that government to be heavy handed in its policy.

this is only based on the idea that the entire human race can see itself as one group...which we are not at right now in our development....

and if we could all join hands and sing kum-by-yah why should there be government in the first place?

The problem is how would the world become one???

Chances are, if it were to happen, it would be under the flag of a conquerer. Wars might end temporarily, but history has taught us that those who rule by force are often deposed by force.

Michel makes an excellent point. If Europe cannot agree on an EU Constitution, then it is unlikely a 'One World Government' would be possible under 'normal' circumstances.

The more I think about it, the only way we might even move close to it would be if all the nations and peoples of the world had to come together to solve some catastrophic problem. Just think of any of the big disaster movies and recall that the only way they saved humanity was to work together. Unless something on that big a scale happens, I don't think OWG will happen.

One world government?

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone all on the same side?!?!!? We could get $@#* done so much faster! Everyone would have equal rights and we'd have a kick $#* economy! We could share technology, and increase human lifespan. We could share ideas/thoughts/religions...so much easier and more efficient. We could choose our leaders as the human race rather than choose them based on geologic area.

SO GREAT OF AN IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to be irritating and say that at the moment the world is not ready for unity. I think we are slowly moving towards such a state, however. It will be 100s of years in the making though.

That is one of the main reason why I'm not a communist. All that talk of a worldwide revolution was never going to work. Change is a gradual process. As much as I would love the world to be a better place tomorrow, the only thing I can do is play my small part and hope that it will happen some day.

I'm being very inconsistent in my life philosophy, but I think a supreme tyrant would do the thing. And I would be it.
Heya NothingIsNot,

I used to feel exactly the same way as you do. Then I realised that Hitler and Stalin probably felt exactly the same way as I did as well :(. Such a feeling stems from frustration and impatience and can good really come from that?

That would work for maybe a couple of years and then one group of people in that society would get angry at another group and you would have civil war not long after. So yes, actually there would be war, that one government could never agree on anything even if you could get everyone on the planet to agree on forming one big society which also would never happen. It is still a nice concept .... if only we could create a utopia but even that would get boring after awhile. Blessings!

i am with jewscout 100% on this. i see this as nothing but a bad idea especially in my lifetime. you have to figure, if this happens the tyrant who is running the show is not going to let you hold on to your cultural life or your religious beliefs unless they just so happen to be what the new superstate wants. think of all the languages and cultures that would die, all of of the different ideas of what life is to be would fade away too. what a borring existance. i think too that it would be a perpectual war lifestyle because the people who are forced to give up their cultural idenity would want to fight for their lifestyle, ideas, princples, religions, etc. and this would be pretty much everyone.

What I don't understand, is the thinking that just because the world is united under one government, that we'd get all those things. My family can hardly decide on what kind of pizza to get; I don't think human nature would ever allow for a world where everyone was "on the same side." Even in a huge dictatorship, we could never share all the same thoughts and ideas, people would just be forced to pretend they did.

And how would our world suddenly start to gain advancement? What would be the motivation for all this new technology? War, or even just threat of war has always been a great motivation for invention.

One world government doesn't guarantee equal rights for everyone either. If it did, all people of one nation would always have equal rights.

Ideally, I wouldn't want one government. I'd much rather have many governments who could actually get along.
