Should We Encourage or Discourage?

Should we encourage or discourage under age girls to meet up with people they have become acquainted with on the internet?

In many ways, I think this is a pretty clear cut question: We should discourage underage girls from meeting in person alone people they've only met on the internet. I live in a town where there is a local law enforcement officer who poses as a thirteen year old girl on the internet. He gets solicited by all sorts of adult men. I think he has racked up something like 48 convictions so far this year. The surprising thing is that some of the men who are convicted of having solicited sex from a minor are "respectable" men -- preachers, officers in the military, etc. So, the internet is a very dangerous place for a young girl to meet people.

Having said all that, I think there are instances when it is perfectly alright for a young girl to meet with people she's met on the internet. A young friend of mine just went to England on a Harry Potter tour. The tour was organized over the internet, and she had never met in person any of the other 50 or so people on the tour before. But everything went alright.

I was married by the age of 19 and thought I knew everything there was to know about relationships and life in general. Of course I didn't, I was just a novice on my jouney of life. It's hard enough to meet up and get to know people in person yet less on the internet where you only know what you read from people's emails or posts. Youth is a time to explore, but gosh, sensibility isn't a trait that very young people have under their belt.

No....No child.....female or male should be encouraged to meet up with people on the internet. I will go even further and say adults should also use due caution.

I agree that it shouldn't be encouraged for a underage person of any gender to meet up with anyone they've met over the internet. Mind you, I wouldn't encourage them to meet up with anyone met over the phone, or by any other media, either. (Okay, I'm gonna be a wretched mother, I can just see it! :) )
