Recently, my grandmother and I got into genealogy when she saw a commercial for an online service that helps you discover your family origins. Her not being the best with computers, asked me to help. I was ecstatic, because I don’t spend enough time with her and who knows how long she will be around on this earth. So we signed up.
This is where things took a turn for the worse.
After we put in our names, birth dates, locations, etc. we started doing some digging into the results. We found out that we were of German descent which was fascinating by itself. I didn’t know I was German. We were shown several German names that we were connected to via bloodline, and after some more digging…
Nazis.
I could not believe it. As soon as I realized that I was related to Nazis and Nazi supporters, I closed my laptop. Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized who I was and where I came from. My grandmother was quiet and agreed that we should stop pursuing this endeavor. She didn’t speak of it again."
