Most of the USA mushrooms are safe, but most of the time it comes down to easy things.
1. Orange tops usually bad.
2. Pink Gills Good
3. Black Coming on Mushroom bad when cut.
4. Cook all of them well, some toxic are not after well cooked. Even a large percentage of toxic shrooms can be consumed if boiled, the water leached off, and boiled again and then rinsed.
5. Pancake mushrooms are good, but a gamble. There are many lookalikes and the lookalikes are toxic. It's mostly differentiated on the species of wood they live on, so don't bother with those unless you are very educated on the types of trees in your areas, lol.
Morels are always safe there is nothing at all that looks like them, they're so obvious and you can fearlessly consume them on finding if you'd like.
When in doubt, you can try small pieces of nearly anything cooked and see if there is any bitterness or stomach disturbance. If there is no reaction they're probably safe. There are very few mushrooms where a tiny pea sized quantity would cause any problem. Most of the toxic mushrooms seep when scored with a knife, so if you do see that behavior then don't consume. But, this is when you gotta eat to survive thing... Usually if you have any doubt don't eat it, lol.
There are way more toxic mushrooms on the west coast than anywhere else, if you are picking them there be really careful.
