One of the revolutionary, lasting ideas that Freud introduced and formalized was that children's brains work differently than adult brains. And that failures to develop properly during certain stages of one's childhood can create long term problems into adulthood. Prior to his time, there wasn't a nuanced understanding of the fact that children actually think/process information differently than adults.

Now, pretty much everyone today agrees that he was wrong 10 ways from Sunday on the specifics of how all that actually works. But the bedrock idea we can in large part thank him for.

I did read of a case he studied...
someone speaking a language they did not know
in sudden fits of emotion

some people thought the patient was .....possessed

after examination ....it was determined....
stories were read to the person as a small child in a foreign language
as if to give the child an audio lesson

a trauma followed
then occasions of recital

translation was apparently the clue

Why the father? Dont know, there were others before him. But i do see him as the father of psychoanalysis.

What did he do? Quite a few things, his id, ego and superego idea now help to guide neuroscience
Conscious/unconscious shows how everyday tasks can be automatic and repressed unconscious memories can influence behaviour

Was he good or bad? I think a bit of both, he certainly has plenty to answer for, but some of his ideas make our lives better
