The seven deadly sins are pride, lust, anger, covetousness, envy, laziness, and gluttony.
The Bible condemns cowardice, selfishness, theft, sex outside of marriage, murder, disrespecting parents, and dishonesty.

Are we all in agreement that those vices and "Sins" cause an enormous amount of pain in our world? I find much of the Bible to be ridiculous, but there is a lot of wisdom there if you look in the right places. My indulgence in those vices that the Bible condemns has caused me much grief, pain, regret, and shame (not to mention legal trouble), and I've seen others destroy their lives and harm others through indulgence in those "sins".

I'm just curious if we are all in agreement here that those vices cause much pain in our world, and if not please do share. Thanks in advance! :)

I consider myself a utilitarian consequentialist (descriptive, not prescriptive) so I have very few hard and fast rules that work in the way Christianity does. Instead of attaching a value to an action based on its intrinsic virtue, I look at each action on an individual case. Most of the seven deadly sins I can think of instances where it doesn't harm anyone, and can actually be quite helpful.
For example, being proud of an accomplishment of yourself or family or friends, because you or they worked hard to earn that pride.
Or thanksgiving is a gluttonous holiday but it's a wonderful time for family to come together, cook and eat.
I have absolutely no problem with lust towards one's partner.
And even the biblical God is described as wrathful towards injustice.

Can an imbalance of these traits cause problems? Yes, but that is also certainly true of their opposite. (E.g. no pride, no anger, etc.)

I have no problem with sex out of wedlock and pretty much only value marriage as a way to secure financial and legal merging of assets, not as a declaration of commitment. Obviously it doesn't work well as that and people should rely on open communication, empathy and safe sexual practices to avoid relationship problems, not marriage.

or, maybe, all our pain in the world causes the sins and vices

I think this is an important point. Enjoying food, celebrating one's accomplishments are not to me sins but a normal part of life unless they take over one's life.

For believers a 'sin' would be where something diminishes one's connection with the divine and repentance etc is a way of reestablishing that connection.

Being proud need not be sinful. A parent is endlessly proud of their progeny. When it becomes to the point where they excuse horrible behaviour of said progeny, sure it's a problem. But what's wrong with being proud of your family? Of your achievements?
Lust is important too. That is the basis of sexual selection isn't it? Sexual attraction should be part of a healthy relationship (not the only part, obviously. Unless one wants a purely sexual relationship I suppose.)
Covertness is the basis for bettering oneself. Out of competition or even envy. People can use them to pull themselves out of the gutter, so to speak. A little healthy competition need not be condemned.
Laziness is only a problem of you are lazy for extended periods of time. But humans are not machines, nothing wrong with a lazy day as a reward to hard work. You need to recharge or you will run yourself into the ground.
Sex before marriage is important because sexual compatibility is a part of a healthy successful marriage. One should absolutely err "take a test drive before buying." Be open and frank with each other. I think sex is a holy act to bring people together but two virgins awkwardly trying to figure it out is just awkward lol. Treat yourself like you're worth more. Gluttony is fine every once in a while. When I'm at my family's Christmas shindig we all overindulge, in food, in drink and in each other's company. What's wrong with that?
A little hangover might catch you, if you're not careful, but that's a rite of passage.
Disobeying parents is a very important part of developing independence and identity. Sure outright disobedience is often bad. But a little bit is an important part of childhood development. Also say a parent asks the kid to kill someone I think the kid has a right not to obey.

The problem with dealing with black and white absolutes is you neglect the quite helpful grey. You end up condemning humans for being humans. I see this as using shame to control the masses.

Break free of bonds and realise the true extent of the divine experience. Or don't I don't care, your life.

That's an awful lot of disparate "sins" to lump together.

Those vices are the primary cause of war, violence, rape, homicide, unwanted pregnancies, STDS, stealing, lying, addiction, obesity, suicide, selfishness, and various other problems in our world!

There are exceptions.

Sex outside of marriage is hardly the evil that stealing, lying & addiction are.
I say it's one of the better things in life.

Everyone of those are a result of ignorance of love (which is what sin is) except for the "parental" thing. Perfect love (which the Father is, and which we seek to attain) would not cause any of those actions.

Cowardice shouldn't be confused with meekness, either.

As far as parents, we separate ourselves from the flesh (womb) to become "born" of Spirit. And see our true mother and father. This is gospel after all.

My perspective, anyways.

Who made up this baloney of seven deadly sins? The Bible says that sin is breaking God's laws as listed in the Ten Commandments. And the wages of sin is death. So all sin is deadly.

How is it deadly when sins are forgiven? And the law saved no one. The Jews who followed it died.

It is deadly if one does not ask for and receive forgiveness. The Jews died physically but will still have a chance to live spiritually just like everyone else. Everyone dies physically but the death caused from unforgiven sin is spiritual and eternal.

Already happened. Matthew 27:52-53

In gnosis, Jesus already described his descent into Hades to save those who had died before he gave man the kingdom of God. Matthew 6:33 . Something the Jews never knew of, nor does it appear in the OT.

Nothing my eye, Something for sure
  • Feeling good about yourself for what you accomplish is no sin. Pride has come to mean something positive today, whereas once pride meant being high minded and arrogant and vain and spiteful towards others whom are not as successful. Pride used to mean a false sense of superiority. Pride used to mean, I only care about myself, and care nothing for anybody that isn't as successful.
  • Lust used to mean the selfish desire for power and beauty, and wealth, to control, and dominate.
So I understand what you mean by sin and what those words mean in those terms.

I'd have to say the way it is truly meant, they are destructive, and evil characteristics.

Maybe that's what a devil does, make trash seem like gold, and changes and twists meanings and circumstances with hateful deceptions.

Maybe a devil is about owning what doesn't belong to him/her.

Maybe a devil is out to destroy what's true and good.

Sin the way you mean it, is a devils game, dangerous, and evil.

Evil is the intent to destroy what's innocent.

Innocence is being true and good at heart.

Being true is honesty as deserves.

People don't care about the heart spiritual way of defining motivations. They think it's all outdated. Nothing could be further from the truth.
