Well I was spouting off in the political thread about the abstinence only curriculum thats being pushed for my county schools.

I`ve found a local org that is serious about stopping it.

Mobilized Youth

It`s comprised of the kids who go to school here.
If anyone read the links I gave in the thread I am talking about they read that it was a large group of students that swayed the board to keep Planned Parenthood in the sex-ed courses.
This is the large group of students who did it.

All this controversy happened so quickly they threw up a website to organise and stay on the same page.
It was slapped up and left with no one to run it.

Now that the initial surprise assault by the Christian Coalition has been stalled by these kids I offered to make something more of it for what is sure to be a long haul.

I bought 100 gigs of server space and a personal domain

The guy running Mobilized Youth wanted a blog as the opening page in order to be able to post news and changes quickly.

I ran a java re-direct from his opening page to a blog I set up on my server until I can alter the blog code to set it on his server.

I have tested it in Netscape and IE on a cable modem but I`d like some feedback about how quick this re-direct is and the blog layout in other browsers and dial-up connections so I can alter what needs to be altered.

If anyone who is using a different browser and/or a dial-up could take a moment to go to mobilizedyouth.com and let me know how it loads for you I`d appreciate it.

Thanks

I have high speed so not an issue. Wow Steve, its great set-up. So what happened? How many kids are there? I read the mission statement on the website. I am glad you met up with some friends instead of being all alone on this one.

Thanks Guys, it`s appreciated!

So what happened? How many kids are there? I read the mission statement on the website.
There were 80 kids at the school board meeting, there will be more the next time around.

Over the summer the school board recieved about 100 e-mails from parents wanting contraception education taken out of the life skills curriculum.

They changed the curriculum to fit their request but never notified anyone they did this.
The posted curriculum for life skills at the school boards site still includes contraception as part of the course.

No one noticed anything until these same parents attempted to get Planned Parenthood removed from the life skills course.
Then the local paper noticed and started digging and discovered the curriculum change.

These parents pushed for a board meeting to remove PP.
The meeting was scheduled within a few days with as little notice as possible (Our school board is headed by a fundie).

These kids organized and mobilized within 48 hours and showed up at the board meeting early in protest where apparently the Christian Coalition was already protesting.

This let everyone know who was really behind the curriculum changes.

Anyway the kids stopped them and forced them into a compromise so their momentum is gone.

Now it`s just a slugfest

The next item on the agenda is the pro-life video the head of the school board slid into the curriculum this past summer.
Something else no one knew of.

Thats it so far.

You seem to have a good grip on it. You really did a good thing with all of this. And very brave....Christians can be very ugly when u cross their path on things like this.

Which newspaper discovered this? Who is the head of the department (the fundie ) and is it possible for the same student body to push for her regsignation on this without reprocussions?

With this new info TVOR's idea about the ACLU sounds really good. They probably have experience in this.

Who are the players...that you know of..names churches ect.....their anonmous status gives them obvious power....

the 100 emails are banded by some organization right? a church or group? If it it a church and it turns out to be methodist or some more liberal non denominational they have a head church that may not know about the actions...and the priest...of this church..does he know and or is involved? If he doesn't know he needs to know what is being done in the name of his church.

His position in this mess hasn`t become that central yet.
It may depending upon where the debate about this video goes.
He can be voted out within the next year anyway but that is a good thing to bring up.
If nothing else we can begin an election campaign against him.

They do and I have contacted the local chapter here but haven`t gotten much back yet.
I think I`d need to flood them with E-Mails from many parents before they`d dedicate the resources to it.
That can be done.

This is a great idea.
Stripping them of anonymity would display them and their beliefs to the entire community.
Good or bad I don`t know many people who would welcome that kind of scrutiny.

Thanks Robtex...some excellent ideas.
