Six foods.

I generally hate hypotheticals, but on occasion they might provide fodder for fascinating conversation, a solution to certain bored individuals, or humour. This is for JG.

Nuclear fallout has been announced. You get to choose six foods, unlimited supply, to keep you in your bunker for five years. Which six do you choose? (No mixes like stew or chili are allowed, only plain foods.) Which six do you take?

Did you just introduce a food thread with a reference to fodder?

Hmm, that would have to cover all nutritional needs of all essential food ingredients, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, fibre, vitamins and minerals. "Bananas" was my first thought as they are known to be one of only a very few on which humans can live exclusively for long periods of time. Milk would be great as it is very versatile and can be made into cheese. One type of grain would be good, wheat or maybe barley. Greens, so many choices and I can't think of one which wouldn't become boring after the first year. Bell pepper probably. I thought of including nuts, almond or cashew but I think I'd better like some more protein, seafood, especially shrimp.
One left which, of course, has to be the absolutely essential coffee.

1. Black beans
2. Salmon
3. Basmati rice
4. Garlic
5. Chocolate
6. Lemons

Choosing just six is very difficult!

Unless spices are assumed to be present in addition to the six foods, a few of you are going to be eating some pretty bland dishes. :)

What kind of fallout shelter would be without iodized salt to protect your thyroid from radiation?

Rice
Pasta
Carrots
Onion
Tomato
Prawns

I notice drink was not included in the requirements so white wine. I rarely use salt in cooking but wine sauces are a must.

What are the rules regarding spices and salt here, @Vinayaka? If these are readily available in addition to the six foods, I'm changing salt, black pepper, and red chili powder to paneer cheese, cashews, and onion.

Not available. Sorry. (Back when awareness was jumping around trying to invent a topic that might be of interest to CG, I was aware in an extremely pragmatic world ... i.e. survival. Originally the number was 10, but then it morphed to 6, and only 6) Survival would be tough, if even possible. Most likely one would come out of the shelter malnourished in some way. Rickets and scurvy both came to mind.

I'm not exactly an expert on nutrition but I had that in mind when choosing my diet (except for the coffee which is probably bad). It's bland (but everything gets bland after a year) but I think I'd walk out that shelter and not be carried.
