Along with Thai Pusam, Skanda Shasti is a popular festival to Murugan. This year it only for 5 days but is usually for 6. For Saivas and Murugan bhaktars all through South India and elsewhere, its an important festival. Skanda Sashti: Hindu Festival of Lord Subramanya

But as with other Murugan festivals, it is, shall we say, a time of austerity, unlike festivals lie Diwali. Its more fast instead of feast. Personally, my kind of festival. So enjoy.

Wow ... seven years since I made that post. Again this year it's only 5 days ... starts tonight. Yay. First really chilly day here, -10 C, and the west wind, she blow blow blow. A brisk walk from car to koyil, in veshti. Not cold enough yet to change inside. If anyone else here celebrates, enjoy!

From the temple schedule it looks to be 8 days. Though it's mainly a Vaishnava temple, with Krishna being the presiding deity, they celebrate just about everything. One year I was part of a procession carrying kalashas. Took me by surprise because the manager literally grabbed my arm and handed me a kalash. :D

Oh yes, the 'milk pot' festivals, at various times. We have one during out annual festival, and then at Thai Pusam. Maybe the 8 days is an extension into the weekend. You do have a Murugan shrine in that monstrous temple, no?

The Skanda Purana mentions Devasena and Valli as daughters of the god VISHNU in a PREVIOUS life. What is your position on this translation? Do you believe Devi Devasena and Vall Devi the consorts of Lord Muruga were so? I am a devotee of Muruga and am very attached to the divine Devasena and Valli, this attachment often would call me to the temple on Sacramento Street (SF) to have darshan of Murugan Skanda. I am curious if you ascribe to the belief that these Devis were ddughters of Vishnu in previous cycles. Is it not amazing how the traditional rites and dharmic crossings intertwine so many "sects" in Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu, Indra, Surya? I am speaking of Tamil margas.

For me, a North-Indian, Devasena is Lord Indra's daughter, and Valli, a tribal girl, though we know Murugan as Shanmukha and Kartikeya and not by many other beautiful names that the South-Indians have for him and which I like very much.

"The old man was hungry and asked Valli for food; she gave him a mixture of the millet flour and honey. However, it made him thirsty and he asked for water. She provided water from a nearby stream. He jokingly remarked that she had satisfied his thirst and she could quench his thirst for a companion. Valli was angered again and started to leave the place. He requested assistance from his divine brother, Ganesha, who appeared as a wild elephant at that time. On seeing the wild elephant, Valli was scared and ran back to the old man, pleading him to save her from the elephant. Murugan proposed to save her only if she agreed to marry him. In the heat of the moment, she agrees and he reveals his true form. It was then Valli realized that it was her beloved Lord, who was with her all the time.

After the millet harvest was over, the chief with his daughter and entourage returned to their native land. Murugan returned for Valli in the guise of the aged man and the couple spent time away from Valli's family. Nambi Raja on being alerted about Valli's absence, flew into rage and went in search of her. When the search party finally found Valli with Murugan, the chief and his men shot arrows at Murugan, but they all failed to even touch the God and instead, the chief and his sons fell lifeless. Valli was disheartened to see the lifeless bodies of her kith and kin, and requested the to bring them back to life. Murugan instructed her to revive them herself; by her mere touch everyone was brought back to life. The chief Nambi Raja and his tribesmen realized that it was Murugan, in the form of the old man and prayed to Him. Murugan took his true form and blessed the tribesmen, and the chief conducted the marriage of his daughter and Murugan."

I agree with you! Indepth reply also from you. I am taught that TWO TRUTHS actually CAN be both true even if they seem to contradict each other in the divine realms, so what you say also is true. I know that sounds strange. But that is what I am influenced by which is also "North Indian" in the sense of my influence under savants of Kashi Varanasi. Do you remember me? I am not South or North Indian at all, I am from a America and am an American Hindu. You gave me a very nice response, full of details and amazing history as you have always done for years on this forum. Dhanyavad!

Shiva, I was giving my view (as a North-Indian). Whether you are from North-south, East-West, India, outside India, it would have been the same. I am a bit peeved that North-Indians do not worship Kartikeya in the same way as they worship Ganesha, though we have his idols in every Shiva temple. After all, both are Shiva's sons. Actually, Ganesha has taken over Kartikeya's responsibility to be the 'Vioghna-harta' which suits Kartikeya better. Did he not save Devas from Asuras? :)

I see that you are returning to the forum after quite some time, so welcome back. :)

I never know exactly what to think of Puranic legends, so don't really think much at all about them. My main focus has always been Murugan, yet Valli and Devasena are right there too. As you know probably 90% of the temples have all 3 enshrined together, but many temples also have Murugan alone.

Dandapani, Palaniandavar is the one I really go too, as He was the first form of Murugan I met, and got to know really well. Palani was for me, the strongest (sannidhya) one of the Arapadaveedu pilgrimage.

Yeah, we visualize Kartikeya more as the General of the Deva army, so 'Dandapani' rather than as an ascetic (though the ascetic also is 'Dandapani'). Before I started discussions with you, I did not know that there was this additional aspect of Kartikeya.

We honour Dandapani the ascetic here once a year. He was the first Murugan form to arrive at this temple. Later today Boss and me are making the 3 hour drive south to the newly established Murugan temple that had its mahakumbabhishekham 5 months back. Nice to have on so close. I'm guessing we'll average about 3 times a year getting there.
