I think smalltalk comes easier to some people than it does to others. I'm one of those people who can often find that it's hard work. I'm mainly interested in ideas, and when I was much younger, I more or less assumed that everyone was just as interested in ideas as I was. I recall once being on a first date with a girl I was very excited about being with ------ but I could think of nothing else to try to talk with her about except Descartes! I think she detected a geek. :)

ROFL, I think it is the same with me Sunstone. I can talk all day about ideas I've had and things I've read about, but when it comes to talking about the weather and other small talk... I fail miserably. Once when I was hanging with some guys with my sister (who is infinitely more skilled at acting shallow than I am) someone made a really lame Hindu joke and I sought to correct them my telling them a little of what Hindus really believed... and my sister just gave me this disgusted look and later told me that I didn't even seem to KNOW what I should NOT talk about...

Maybe I misunderstand, but I don't equate smalltalk with being shallow. In my line of work, I must be able to discuss many issues, on a fairly intelligent level, at any time. I consider this "smalltalk" in the sense that we are really killing time (while feeling out the other persons breadth of knowledge) prior to taking one subject to a much deeper level.

As far as I know, smalltalk is like "Hello, how are you doing today? Fine? Me too. Lovely weather we're having, isn't it?" Space fillers rather than actual conversation...

OK Runt, I can live with that definition. In that case, I feel very comfortable with it. Then again, in the group of people that I interface with, this is commonly referred to as "yea, he's a real Bullshipper" (intentional typo).

I think it is, Sunstone. Most people would probably agree. I work as a quality consultant, teaching small to medium sized companies how to improve the quality of their product, increase productivity, increase profit margin, and limit or decrease waste (among other things).

I really like what I do because I see different processes almost every day. For example, I have worked with companies that manufacture automotive components, material handling systems (conveyors, etc.), candy manufacturers, health care, and many others. Really neat to see so many different things.

Thanks for asking,

PS - what do you do for a living Sun?

Mostly I've worked in sales, Voice, but now I'm in the process of re-tooling for computer aided drafting.

Wow - now that is a career change!! From art (the art of BS) to science. My hat is off to you. I would say that anyone that is even remotely successful in sales has to have a gift for smalltalk.
