Materialism/Animism
For various reasons I decided to coin a new word. Whether anyone else likes it, mocks it, or uses it or not, I really don’t care…
Animathallus:
This combines the terms anima [Latin: air, breath, spirit, vital force, feminine of ANIMUS] and thallus [Latin, green stalk, from Greek thallos, from thallein, to sprout or bloom.]
Literally this word could be defined as, “sprout of consciousness”, or could also mean “seed of life”.
It is a word that ascribes itself to the hypothetical premise of the existence of a very primitive, low level type of consciousness or vital force that is not limited to the human brain and not to be confused with “self-awareness”. It is the animating force behind everything that exists, and from which non-aware (not fully conscious) life-forms first came into existence. This animathallus, as I choose to call it, exists everywhere, in all naturally existing forms including all energy. It is that driving force which causes even subatomic particles to perform their “wave-like” functions. Without this, there would be no such thing as energy. Perhaps someone like Amit Goswami or Nick Herbert would call this “consciousness”, but for me the term consciousness is not adequate enough to describe this “animating force” and is too easily confused or conflicted with mainstream definitions of what constitutes consciousness.
There is simply a lack of terms to express the notion of an external, ever-present, animating force that is not limited to the human brain or type of life-form without it sounding all spiritualistic. Animathallus is a deep, inner-force that is present in ALL forms. It is the initial “spark” that started the universe and it is the “driving force” behind all things that either change form or evolve, even energy itself. It is the closest thing to “God” without actually calling it God. This is much like Universal Consciousness or Brahman, but I choose not to use those words to describe it.
Enjoy.
