In an urgent drive to help deal with all those pesky non-persons cluttering up society, the semi-autonomous government of Chechnya has apparently been rounding up gay people and throwing them into concentration camps. Gay men have been injured, even killed as a result of the barbaric treatment they receive in these camps.

I'm not entirely sure if this is part of a drive to further repress LGBT people by the Russian government or if it's something the Chechens decided to do themselves.

I honestly thought we were past this...

Do keep in mind it is Russian officials doing this. Yes, they are Muslim majority, but they are also Russian subjects, and Russia does not have a very good record when it comes to the LBGT community. I see such an action receiving Putin's full blessing.

It's probably considered internal affairs of the semi-autonomous region and Ramzan Kadyrov will do what he wants. Of course Russian government could put a stop to this if they wanted to, but not without cost. They are also both ideologically for supressing LGT-rights.

I don't know anything about Putin, and I'm certainly not going to pay any attention to the propaganda his name is shrouded in. Whether or not he actually has "journalists who disagree with him executed" will remain a mystery as far as I'm concerned, no one will present a clear headed, unbiased argument for that.

What I do know is that Putin is very well liked by the Russian people, and that he banned GMOs, which automatically earns him some respect.

I found out that Dmitry Peskov says that it's all an April fool's joke. Which could mean either of four things (at least to me); Either he's telling the truth, or it's an April fool's joke gone awry, or he's ignorant of what goes on in Chechnya, or he's lying (but what are the odds of a high ranking government official in Russia lying to people right?). Let's look on the hopeful side, he says in this article quote&quote, "it's not on the kremlin's agenda."

I hope he's just ignorant... But I got a feeling, considering this is Russia, he probably isn't being honest.

I forgot to mention in the OP that the Chechen government has taken to denying there are any gay people in Chechnya at all and obviously they can't imprison people who don't exist in prison camps.

He would also risk weakening the strong alliance they have by doing this. This needs to become enough of a problem for Kadyrov or Putin if we are to see the human rights respected and seeing how bridges between the West and Russia have been burned and also crying wolf in recent times I don't see the West having any say towards this. Also West has been feeding Kadyrov's enemies so there isn't much of a relationship to work on there either. The outcry needs to come from somewhere else.

UPDATE: Chechen Islamic scholars, political authorities and public opinion leaders have issued a statement accusing the news outlet Novaya Gazeta, which first warned the world of concentration camps for gays in Chechnya, of insulting "the secular foundations of Chechen society and the dignity of men-Chechens, as well as our faith". They also said that basically the newspaper and its employees will be subject to "retaliation without a statute of limitations" for daring to tell the rest of the world what these Islamic fanatics & their collaborators are up to.

They seem pretty perturbed for people who aren't rounding gays up and torturing, harassing & murdering them.

UPDATE #2: The Chechen President, Ramzan Kadyrov has said he plans to eliminate all gay Chechen men by the start of Ramadan which begins on the 26th of May this year. This is from the same government that denied there were even any gay Chechens to begin with. This has gone from being hushed up to openly-discussed social cleansing. No, not just social cleansing, genocide - the Chechens aren't even trying to hide it any more. And where's the mainstream news outlets in all this? I've not seen any coverage.

I don't think he will - or if Putin did, it'd be orchestrated and Kadyrov's Islamic tyranny would go back to slaughtering gay people once the world turned away thinking it had all stopped. I think it impossible there's no Kremlin involvement - not with the sheer level of control Putin's regime has in Russia. I think the Chechens are acting in such a way that attempts to give the Kremlin plausible deniability.
