Social Witness in Texas

Hey all,

I recently gave a presentation here at the UU Fellowship on an upcoming vote on a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage (and might ban marriage entirely) here in the state of Texas.

I ran a copy of my remarks by Lilithu and Maize here, because I wanted their independent opinion before I presented them.

Today, selections from my speach on the issue were used in an article in our local paper on the proposed amendment. Since Maize and Lilithu helped me vette the speach, and because UU is mentioned, I thought I would share the article with you.

If anyone is interested in the text of the speech, here it is ...

The Southwestern UU District, as well as many of the UU Churches in Texas have signed on as official faith sponsors of the effort to defeat this amendment. We have two weeks, and are working hard. In fact, we will be beginning a media push tomorrow that may even be heard outside of Texas.

I will let you know why after the campaign rolls out.

Many people wonder what we mean by "faith in action" and "faith through deeds"... this is a part of it. But this is not "Social Action" but rather it is "Social Witness".

Yours in faith,

David

This debate has just gotten a little more complicated...

Several legal scholars here in Texas have come out today saying that the amendment is so badly worded, it could be interpreted as banning marriage entirely.

I knew about this last week, but it was confidential until the articles came out today written by these lawyers.

Here is a link to a website discussing this...

Here is what is on the ballot:

hjr 6 is the gay marriage ban. If you click on hjr 6 it will give you the specifics of it. The sponsors are important on this. Chisum and Staples. There are really two battles and it is important to understand this. The first and immediate one is the gay marriage ban. The second is accountablity. Chisum and Staples have cost the tax payers quite a number of dollars with the nonsense. Mudded the waters of seperation of church and state. And produced a documented that may ban many other marriage in the state of texas because they couldn't even be professional enough to have lawyers and themselves draft an articulate contract.

There partipation in this blantent denial of equal rights to americans and flippant waste tax-payer dollars needs to haunt them down the career trail. Circulate their names attaching this to it on the net. 6 months from now 6 years from now. Accountablity is a secondary aspect of this sorry campaign.
