Need a bit of a broader definition really. Some on the far right conflate any sort of liberal political views with Marxism and somehow that makes me a communist simply cos I don't go along with them apparently...

Then again, considering I'm British I shouldn't have replied really considering...oh well...

People should make more money. We shouldn't have a homeless population. Cops shouldn't have unchecked authority. Education should be better funded. Secondary education should be either free or at the very least affordable. I'm also pro union and can fight anyone any day of the week on that. Our healthcare system is terrible and should be overhauled. There are several better ones in the world and we can take our pick.

In terms of seizing the means of production I think the quickest way is just strengthening labor in this country. Having something akin to a labor party like other countries have. Its never about handouts its about hard working people and them getting paid what they deserve. Its why we have no vacation, poor pay and terrible benefits. We work till we die and because of the housing market most people under 45 will never own a home.

None of these things were caused by laziness. Millennials worked more hours on average than gen X or boomers. They are more highly educated and not just in "gender studies" but actual degrees. Trades didn't just randomly die off they were killed. Trade schools basically were wiped from existence and on the job training for most of these skilled positions are nearly unheard-of or near impossible to get into.

We live in the scarred battlefield of the a failed war on drugs that have left our neighborhoods destroyed and defunded. Our prison population is inflated and if you line it up its not because we got more crime. Its because we privatized the prisons. For the first time in history capitalism said "more prisoners means more money for us" and suddenly it was profitable to have prisoners instead of a dredge on society. They get to do slave labor since that is also written into our 13th amendment as the only legal way to do it.

All the while people scream "personal responsibility" like most of the destruction and degradation of our lives the past 50 years haven't been carefully planned and executed to make an extra dollar by no less than a few hundred rich people behind closed doors.

I believe in freedom first and democracy second. And neither party is supporting both of these ideals. The republicans least so on both sides. The market systems that rule our world today are driving our planet to the brink and making the lives of the vast majority of Americans worse by the year. Everything from the loneliness crisis of young men to the mass shootings to the endless military action abroad can all be rooted back to the same underlying principles that can be solved through a more socalistic approach.

Like my father and grandfather before me, I have been a socialist and a trade unionist (and, loosely, a Christian of sorts) all my adult life. But I have never been an American, so I can't comment on what any of those terms might mean in that strange place.

I liked New York though, for what that's worth.

Hmmmmmm the paucity of responses must mean there aren't "plenty." I'm shocked. Shocked I tell you. I was expecting lots of links to legitimate sources to demonstrate this plentiful level of socialism and Marxism. Ah well.
