Solar power Plant Lighting Birds On Fire In Midair

I... need one of those Dr. Death ray zapper fields by my house. Im sick of insects, sick of mosquitoes, sick of frogs, and idgaf about the birds here in urdan central. None of the native birds come this far east anyhow, they hang out near/in the everglades.

I'm in Florida, too. I wasn't defending Florida bugs, just desert ones. (Just kidding.)

I don't like to be around a lot of bugs. But...they are important. I'm concerned about the possibility of killing massive numbers of them with a technology we think is better for the environment, just because it's a different impact than other things we've been doing. I think we should pay close attention and make sure we're not thinking this is good, just because it's alternative to coal, or oil.

I'm not advocating shutting it all down immediately, especially since I know I know so little about it. I'm hoping the larger scale operations indicated as planned for the future don't move forward unless, and until, this problem gets corrected with the technology.

They'll correct it. Bugs are relatively easy to replace, too.

We use noise machines, (50$ from homedepot) to keep the birds, ducks, creepy critters, Obamas children, what have you, from a larger building I maintain. Has like a 100 foot radius, and makes noise in a targeted direction thats as wide as a baseball bat tip about 5 inches from the ground. Perhaps these people just dont care enough to do something about it. IF I can buy a 50$ noise machine that works from home depot, how can they not come up with technology that does the same thing but at a grander scale. Mind, these noise beams don't shoot up.. just along the ground, 5 inches up. Perhaps there really is nothing they can do about it. If anything, id feel bad for the person that company hires to strictly pick up dead birds all day.

From Wirey's link:

"Man-made structure/technology

Associated bird deaths per year (U.S.)

Feral and domestic cats

Hundreds of millions [source: AWEA]

Power lines

130 million -- 174 million [source: AWEA]

Windows (residential and commercial)

100 million -- 1 billion [source: TreeHugger]

Pesticides

70 million [source: AWEA]

Automobiles

60 million -- 80 million [source: AWEA]

Lighted communication towers

40 million -- 50 million [source: AWEA]

Wind turbines

10,000 -- 40,000 [source: ABC]"

And I assume this solar thing kills even less than that. So shutting them down due to bird deaths, however tragic, would be nonsensical.
