Sponsored head shave

I have really, really long hair (for a guy anyway) and everyone always tells me to get my hair cut. So I decided I would shave it and donate any money from donations I recieve to the DEC in order to help out the situation in Asia at the moment.

However, I have never done a sponsored event before and so I was wondering if there was anyone on here who has done something similar before who would be able to give me advice on the best way to go about this. All help would be very much appreciated because I want to get this started as soon as possible.

I did this last March, to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. It's an annual event here in Australia, called The World's Greatest Shave For A Cure. My 'before' and 'after' pics used to be there, but they're gone now...
I work at McDonalds, so it was really easy for me to get donations...I made a huge poster, with 'before' pics (since customers never saw me with my hair down - it was midway down my back), just set up a couple of tins, and customers would put their change in. I also did the rounds of local businesses, asking for donations. Mum helped me out with some, donated some jewellery to raffle and donated her time selling the tickets. Family and friends donated...I ended up raising $1792. I also donated my hair after the event, to Wigs For Kids.
Places you could try for donations - if you're involved in sport, you could try your local team/sporting club, school, work, local businesses...you name it, really. Just make sure there are no permits required before you do any of it...the council can get picky about that sort of thing. You could also involve the local newspaper/radio, if you plan to do the shave in a public event. My advice is basically make as big a deal of it as you can - word of mouth does a lot. Best of luck!

Thanks very much bastet! You've given me a lot of ideas.

Does anyone in England know exactly how I can claim gift aid on the donations which I recieve? I think there might be a special type of form I need to get or something but Im not sure.

I've been waiting for just that kind of event but I don't think I want to create one myself. If there is someone in the local area (within Virginia) aware of a good cause (taken in the broadest sense - I'd do it for a church) holding an auction for charity, please contact me with the particulars.
