This is one of the first signs of spring where I grew up. The breaking up of the ice on the Wild Ammonoosuc and Ammonoosuc rivers. The wild river rarely actually ices all the way over (I never saw it happen) as the water flows to fast to freeze in many small pockets. Never the less, significant amounts of ice builds up and it holds the water back until it warms up enough for that crucial moment when the ice upriver finally gives way.

this one shows the more upper reaches of the river where the wild river is more hemmed in and does wicked damage, ripping down trees and scouring the riverbed ... while the one below shows it near where it joins the main branch of the Ammonoosuc.

Once the flood recedes you would never know there had been any ice at all.
On the main branch of the Ammonoosuc the blocks of ice could be 2-3 feet thick.
What is the first sign of spring in your area?
