State Fair, Trying Something New

So, it's State fair season here, which is always a lot of fun.

I poked around the small county one nearest me, last week with my family, as my parents were visiting from our of town. I really enjoyed the grange displays, and other various exhibition halls, and in doing so remembered that there are contests at the State Fair for things like amateur grown vegetables, homemade preserves and other foods, etc.

So long story short, I've decided to submit some of my own homemade jam and jelly, one in each category to the overall State Fair this year. I signed up for both the jam and jelly categories. Wish me luck.

Are you doin the Puyallup? :p

Good luck!
I just learned that the Puyallup fair is about four times the size of the Evergreen State fair. The Evergreen State Fair is about the same size as a good sized county fair in Minnesota where I grew up so I was never too impressed by that. I see that the Puyallup fair is a lot bigger but it is still much smaller than the Minnesota State Fair. I had no idea that that fair was the nation's largest.

At any rate good luck to @The Hammer ! Post some pictures of your ribbons.

All the very best luck. I stopped a few years ago, but I used to love doing my own preserving. Partner and I used to put down upwards of 100 jars of various things -- some to give away, most for us. Ain't nothin' tastes better than home-made pickles, jams, jellies and other preserves!

One old favourite was to make jalapeno jellies -- in three varieties. I'd separate my japanenos into 3 lots, and take the seeds and ribs from the first lot and add them to the third, so I'd wind up with mild, medium and ouch!

I feel like the Puyallup fair is western Washington's unofficial fair in general. Seems to have the best rides, the best attractions, and the best food. As far as central Washington goes, that would have to be the Ellensburg rodeo. Not sure about eastern Washington, but I'm sure Spokane is involved somehow

Interesting about the Minnesota State Fair. Smaller population state than Washington, but Minnesotans know how to have a good time apparently since their State Fair is so much bigger!
