PONDICHERRY, India, Jan. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- A statue was placed Saturday on the seashore of India's southeastern coastal city of Pondicherry to commemorate the Dec. 26 tsunami tragedy.
The statue, a household woman with a baby in her arms looking out to the sea, depicts the pain and personal loss of the tsunami-affected families, especially those fisherfolk families, said P.V.Prabhakaran, the framer and a lecturer of the government-run Bharathiyar palkalai Koodam Art School in Pondicherry.
"In the tsunami it was the women and children who were worst affected. Amidst the destruction around, she looks out for her husband -- her only hope in life," Prabhakaran said.
On Dec. 26 last year, tidal waves triggered by massive earthquakes off Indonesia's Sumatra Island swept through almost the whole coastline of India's southeastern state of Thamil Nadu, leaving 7,993 people dead, mostly fishermen and their families, and 896,871 displaced. Pondicherry and its neighboring Cuddalore and Nagappattinam were the most seriously stricken areas in ThamilNadu.
