"History in general is a collection of crimes, follies, and misfortunes, among which we have now and then met with a few virtues, and some happy times; as we sometimes see a few scattered huts in a barren desert."
~~Voltaire
Are Voltaire's words still true today?
Is this an acurate summary of what history (and by extension, human nature) is all about? If so, why do people still become enthusiastic about politics, given that it is just a "collection of crimes, follies, and misfortunes"? If not, how is real history (or human nature) different from Voltaire's understanding of it? What do you think?
