Street names, anyone?

Who would you name a street after?

Most streets are named by local politicians and, of course, most streets are named after other politicians. In the United States, that usually translates to a lot of streets named Adams, Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, etc. Also, for some mysterious reason, politicians like to name streets after generals. So, you have Grant, Lee, Patton, Eisenhower, etc.

When you think about it, there is nothing much wrong about this except that people who were neither politicians nor generals have made impressive contributions to our culture and civilization. There have been doctors, scientists, artists, poets, authors, and others who have benefited us as much or moreso than any politician or general. But very few of these folks get streets named after them. Seems like the politicians only know about other politicians or about generals.

So, if you were in charge of naming streets in your community, who would you name them after? Who do you think has done so much to benefit people that they deserve to have a street named after them?

Seriously though I would name it after a person who has changed my life, or dedicate it to someone special.

I think streets should be named for someone like the little ole lady/man who watched out for the safety of the kids that got on the bus stop there or the person who lived their life on that street and turned that street into a community...or have some basis that relates that street to it's location...never after anyone who has served in political office so that someone can get a kickback and special privledges.

Darby Crash, No I'm kidding.

I'd name one after my mother. She's made a huge impact on my life and our community in general. Or maybe Edgar Allen Poe, or Socrates.

What's the single most striking thing these people did to make you want to name a street after them?

St. Herman introduced Orthodoxy to America, lived a pious and ascetic life, and set an example that I can follow.

Loki Lane. I'd make sure to name the curviest, bumpiest, hardest to navigate street in the county that. :jam:

Same in Lebanon. There's even a street named after our stinking President.

I dunno. I'd have to know French or Arabic well. :p Hmmm: Tariq Al-Mowt Ostaz Lahoud.

Wanna know what that means?

The Street of Death Mr. Lahoud. Muahahahahaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm having a brain freeze as to what I'd name a street myself, but this thread has reminded me of something that happened when I was in high school. The mother of one of my friends was in the city council, and she got the nod to rename a road near town. Grabbing this chance with both hands, she came up with a truly dreadful name - Madeira Cake Packet Road. Seriously. Can you imagine if you lived on that road?? Eventually the name was changed again, but it was several years later. I felt so sorry for the residents of that road...what a little power can do to some people who should know better.
