Christian Law Students Sue Ill. University

By Associated Press

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A law school student group that requires members to pledge to adhere to Christian beliefs -- including a prohibition against homosexuality -- has sued Southern Illinois University for refusing to recognize the organization.

A chapter of the national Christian Legal Society at the university's law school filed the lawsuit Tuesday in federal court, alleging school officials violated the group's constitutional rights, including the right to free speech, by revoking its status March 25.

The revocation means the group can no longer use the university's facilities or name, and is no longer eligible for school funding, according to the lawsuit. A university official said, however, the group can still use campus facilities.

The Annandale, Va.-based Christian Legal Society has filed similar lawsuits against other schools, including Arizona State University and the University of California, said the group's attorney, M. Casey Mattox.

Gee! At least three separate universities have the same idea

There are 101 University chapters so we just might expect more revocations The list

I totally agree, TranceAm. I don't know what these kids' problem is, but they're joking themselves if they think any court is going to uphold their complaint. It is obvious discrimination.

I must admit that this is just a little strange. I wonder why on earth they had it in their pledge in the first place. I wonder if they are simply affirming that the Bible teaches that homosexuality is wrong or if they are actively hating homosexuals - there is a difference.

There is a lot of pertinent information missing from this article that will affect the outcome.

Did the Christian Legal Society always have this provision in its pledge or did they change something recently?

Does Southern Illinois University allow other students groups to discrimminate on 'illegal bases' such as race or gender or national origin?

What are the specific rules for student organizations obtaining and keeping a university charter?

Obvisiously, not many of us are going to agree with the
Christian Legal Society, but without knowing the answers to these questions, it is premature for any of us to say for certain that they do no have a case.

If this is the "Christian" Legal Society, then I don't see the problem with not allowing homosexual members since many Christians believe that homosexuality is a sin. Generally when you join an organization, you agree to uphold their beliefs.

That said, I don't understand what the Society's problem is since the univerisity is not banning them from the use of campus facilities. I think it's reasonable on the university's part to not want their name used in conjunction since it does involve discrimination or provide funding for something that promotes discrimination.

In two of the cases, the university was taking Federal money and one of proviso's for that is there will be no discrimination on campus, - teachers, staff and students. If one of the organizations sponsed by the university discriminates, then the federal money is at risk. So what the other two, and I assume in this case, did was to implement a pledge for every organization not to discriminate. When the organization refuses to sign the pledge or follows the pledge, the university is free to revoke the sponsership and the organization must leave the campus. The Boy Scouts of America would not be sponsered by a university because they discriminate against homosexual staff and iinsist on an allegiance to Christianity (I believe that's correct but God in any case). Private organization at the public trough can not discriminate.

Resurrection of a 10-year-old thread. I thought we had an archives for old threads like this?
But it is nice being reminded of some of the awesome people who have visited over those 10 years. I especially miss Jamaesi. I even think she was one of the first Muslims I talked to. It's sad people blame Islam as a whole, because she is very accepting of others (including gay and trans), and she would stand up to defend others. I hope she's doing ok.

I go to a Catholic college and even it is more open to those that are gay. I think they even have a club there for LGBT individuals and those who support them. You don't have to be Catholic to go there either.

I agree it's when others of the faith act like this that they give all of us a bad name. If people could just learn to accept people for who they are.

It's funny. Ben Carson says that segregation doesn't exist for homosexuals, but this sure as heck looks just like it.
