Suicide

Do people who commit suicide go to heaven?

The 6th commandment I think states that man shall not murder.
Does that mean murder as in murder someone else or themself?

I'm not a Christian but what I was tought was that suicide is an unforgivable sin and thus whoever commits it goes to hell.

I agree with Stacey.

In the multi-tiered system that forms the basis of LDS doctrine about the afterlife, I would say that people who commit suicide are not going to hell, but may certainly fall short of the higher degrees of glory given that suicide is considered to be a sinful act.

However, it is also my belief that it is not for us to estimate exactly where people who commit suicide end up. The circumstances surrounding suicide can be hugely unpleasant, and the result of significant trauma, so it would be arguable that an individual who commits suicide may well have not been accountable for their actions at that time. Thus the answer of exactly where that person is would be that only God knows.

I'm a Christians yes. It's very late, and although this is going to be my first post on this forum, I'll try to give my spin on this very important and also very difficult subject.

Heaven and Hell are with us always. Heaven is the Kingdom of God, which exists within us/with us/ through the Holy Spirit. It's the relationship we share with the divine. Hell then, is the total absence of God in our existence.

Remember, that's what I think only, others might interject here and disagree, which they have all the right to do.

If heaven and hell is a quality of spiritual being, then that can be here in life, and after life. To bring yourself to suicide and to abandon hope is, in my view then, obviously the absence of God, ergo Hell.

"You are already in hell if you commit suicide" would be the distilled answer.

Do you stay there after death? I don't know. What I do know is that I trust in the Lord to be good and just. I trust he is love, and I know he would never abandon anyone to hell against their choosing (them choosing hell over heaven by actually clinging to it, loving it more then God). (As a Wesleyan, I do believe in free will, but that's a whole different animal).

I hope that viewpoint helps a little, I am very tired and I am bound to have spelling and syntax errors in this post. I'm looking forward to more posts and I am very happy to have found this forum.

I also knew someone who was deeply depressed and committed suicide. I worked with this person and we didn't get along very well. So yes i was saddened that this happened. also, our family doctor comitted suicide in the 90's.

This is a tradgedy and should not be compounded by hurtful statements. We have absolutely no idea why that person comitted suicide, we do not know thier mind, thier feelings. We are not to judge and make assumptions of which we have absolutely no right. It is very possible that these two people were not accountable for thier actions because of emotional distress. the fact is we do not know anything. All we can do is show compassion for those who are hurt because of these acts and comfort them. Telling someone thier husband is condemned to hell for comitting suicide is not very christian or christ-like. All sins, save it be one and only one (Denying the Holy Spirit after it is made manifest to you, having a full knowlege of the Gospel, rebelling and making a mockery of the Atonement of Christ), we are able to repent of and be forgiven.

It is impossible to believe people go straight to heaven OR hell immediately following death if you are chrisitan. Because it specifically states that all mankind are redeemed from the fall and are to be resurrected because of the atonement of Christ. (see the Epistles to the Corinthians) Since all mankind have not been resurrected yet, there must be a waiting place, a place of learning.
