sunnah of knowledge

Salaam,
This question was raised over breakfast this morning:
The Prophet(saas) said we are supposed to seek ilm, even to China. Does that mean we do not follow the sunnah if we are not constantly seeking knowledge. should we content ourselves with just knowing the Quran like many do, or should we seek knowledge in other texts such as the Bible, the Tao Te Ching, the Dhammapada, the Analects...., using the Quran as a guideline to filter out the lies of men?

Salamu 'alaikum,

Islam is the religion of knowledge, and the first verses revealed to Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him enjoined that:

“Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists). He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen. He has taught man that which he knew not” [al-‘Alaq (The clot) 96:1-5]

Those who have knowledge are the most people who come to know the truth and believe it. Allah says:
“And that those who have been given knowledge may know that it (this Quran) is the truth from your Lord, so that they may believe therein, and their hearts may submit to it with humility”

When Prophet Mohammed pbuh told us that knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim man and woman, and that we should seek knowledge even in China. He gave, pbuh, the example of China because it's so far away, and that means that nothing should prevent us and bloc our way to seek knowlege. Here knowledge means religion, medicine, astronomy..... all types of knowlege that benefits Man.

Prophet Mohammed pbuh said that scholars are the heirs of the Prophets, and that prophets didn't leave behind money, rather their inheritance was knowledge. He said: “Whoever follows a path in the pursuit of knowledge, Allah will make a path to Paradise easy for him.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, Kitaab al-‘Ilm, 10)

He also said: “When Allah wishes good for a person, He makes him understand the religion.” (Agreed upon. Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 69)

Of course in the matter of religion, our holy book the Quran contains all things that a Muslim needs in his daily life, for it gives us a complete perfect system of codes to follow, and it we sincerly follow it we will be the happiest people on earth.

Peace

Salaam,
i agree with you Peace, but do you think we have an obligation to search for knowledge wherever it lies? if all the trees were pens and the oceans ink, all the words of Allah could not be written. surely there is a lot of knowledge we can seek outside the Quran to make our path to paradise even easier.

It's according to your capacity and means john. Our religion is a religion of easiness and not a religion of difficulty. So just try to do your best to attain knowledge that will enable you to lead a life of content and satisfaction.
